Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Neither is universally better: Mega Blastoise fits a bulky Water-type special-attacker role, while Mega Charizard can mean either the Fire/Dragon Mega Charizard X or the sun-powered Fire attacker Mega Charizard Y. The better pick depends on the game, battle format, team, and matchup.
First, which Mega Charizard do you mean?
Charizard has two Mega forms: Mega Charizard X and Mega Charizard Y. The Pokémon Company describes Mega Evolution as temporary and notes that it can change a Pokémon’s appearance and sometimes its type. In Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee!, Mega Charizard X changes from Fire/Flying to Fire/Dragon; Mega Charizard Y is the other form. The official Mega Evolution overview lists both forms alongside Mega Blastoise, and the official Let’s Go guide explains the X type change.
That distinction matters: Mega Charizard X and Y have different types and battle roles, so comparing “Mega Charizard” with Blastoise without specifying the form can lead to the wrong answer.
How they compare in Pokémon X and Y OU singles
For a concrete competitive comparison, the historical Pokémon X/Y OU singles format illustrates the tradeoff. This is a format-specific snapshot, not a universal ranking for every Pokémon game or ruleset. Smogon’s XY strategy guides describe Mega Charizard Y as a sun-based special attacker and Mega Blastoise as a bulky attacker that can remove entry hazards.

| Pokémon | Role and strengths | Tradeoffs |
|---|---|---|
| Mega Charizard Y | Its Drought ability creates sunlight, boosting Fire attacks and temporarily weakening Water moves. It is a powerful special attacker when its team can take advantage of the sun. | It is four times weak to Stealth Rock, so it loses substantial health when entering while the hazard is up. The team needs reliable hazard removal. |
| Mega Blastoise | It combines useful bulk with Mega Launcher-boosted pulse moves, including Dark Pulse, Aura Sphere, and Water Pulse. It can also serve as a spinner to clear hazards. | It is slow and has no recovery move in the cited XY OU analysis, which can make it difficult to keep healthy over a long match. |
In that format, Mega Charizard Y is the more direct choice when the plan is to apply sun-boosted special pressure and teammates can manage Stealth Rock. Mega Blastoise is a better fit when the team wants a durable Water-type attacker and hazard removal in one slot. These roles do not translate automatically to other games or competitive formats.
Where Mega Charizard X fits
Mega Charizard X is a separate option, not a variation of Y’s sun strategy. In Let’s Go, it becomes Fire/Dragon, whereas the cited XY OU comparison focuses on Mega Charizard Y. The official description establishes X’s type change but does not provide a head-to-head competitive ranking against Mega Blastoise. Choose X when its form and type suit the game’s matchup or your preference; do not assume that conclusions about Y also apply to X.

Why the answer changes by game
Pokémon X and Y
In Pokémon X and Pokémon Y, Mega Stones are held by the compatible Pokémon to enable Mega Evolution in battle. The official guide lists Mega Charizard X, Mega Charizard Y, and Mega Blastoise, and places their stones in Lumiose City. It also says the starter you choose affects which related stone you receive initially, while the other two are available at the Stone Emporium. These instructions are specific to those games. See the official Mega Stone guide.
Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee!
The official Let’s Go guide says Charizard can Mega Evolve into X or Y and that the player chooses the form that offers the most advantage in that game. It describes using a corresponding Mega Stone and Key Stone and limits Mega Evolution to once per battle. It also notes that Mega Blastoise’s Special Attack increases greatly. Those are Let’s Go-specific details, not rules to assume in another title.

Pokémon GO
Pokémon GO uses Mega Energy for Mega Evolution rather than the held-stone process described for the main-series games. Niantic’s 2020 launch announcement also described raid benefits and said that, at launch, Mega-Evolved Pokémon could not battle in GO Battle League. Because that eligibility statement is from the 2020 announcement, it should not be treated as a current rule. See Niantic’s Mega Evolution launch announcement for that dated account.
