There is no single best Vault Hunter in Borderlands 3: the right pick depends on how you want to fight. For a first solo run, FL4K and Moze are the easiest recommendations to make—FL4K has a pet that can distract enemies, while Moze can summon the heavily armed Iron Bear. Choose Amara for close-range elemental brawling or Zane for gadget-based flexibility.
Which Borderlands 3 character should you choose?
Start with the kind of combat you enjoy, rather than looking for a universal power ranking. Consider your preferred distance from enemies, whether you want a companion or a mech, and how much you want to manage action-skill interactions.

| Vault Hunter | Best fit | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| FL4K | Solo players who want a pet companion | The pet adds damage and can draw enemy attention. Some skills add healing interactions and can let the pet revive FL4K. |
| Moze | Players who want a mech and a powerful combat mode | Iron Bear offers heavy offense and a defensive role while it is active. |
| Amara | Players who like close-range elemental and melee combat | Her kit rewards getting close, so positioning matters. Flying enemies and elemental resistance can complicate fights. |
| Zane | Players who enjoy gadgets and tactical options | His Digi-Clone can distract enemies and help with repositioning. He can equip two action skills, but doing so means giving up grenades. |
Windows Central’s solo guide identifies FL4K and Moze as natural solo fits from the start; that is not a claim that Amara or Zane cannot complete the game solo. The comparison is about what each kit offers, not a measured ranking of damage or win rates. Windows Central’s solo-play guide and GameSpot’s playstyle guide describe these trade-offs.
Why FL4K and Moze are approachable solo picks
FL4K: pet support while you fight
FL4K’s companion can contribute damage and draw enemies’ attention, giving you another source of pressure during a fight. Some skill choices add healing interactions, and certain skills can let the pet revive FL4K. That makes FL4K a sensible starting point if you like having a companion support your solo run.
#1 Best Overall
Moze: a mech for offense and defense
Moze can call in Iron Bear, a temporary combat mode with weapon options that can deliver heavy damage and help protect her. Pick Moze if the idea of fighting alongside a mech sounds more appealing than relying on a pet or gadgets.
When Amara or Zane is the better match
Amara: close-range elemental brawling
Amara suits an aggressive player who wants to get close and lean into elemental or melee combat. Her style asks you to pay attention to space and enemy position. If you would rather keep enemies at a distance, she is a less straightforward first recommendation; flying enemies and elemental resistance can also make some encounters more demanding.

Zane: flexible gadget play
Zane is the pick for players who enjoy tactical tools. His Digi-Clone can distract enemies and assist with repositioning, and Zane can equip two action skills at once. That flexibility comes with a clear trade-off: equipping a second action skill means you cannot use grenades.
Can you change your build after choosing?
Yes. Each Vault Hunter has three unique skill trees, and PC Gamer reports that you can respec at a Quick-Change machine for a fee. Treat early skill allocations as experiments rather than permanent commitments; the character choice matters more than getting every first point right. The guide’s build suggestions are starting points, not mandatory setups. PC Gamer’s build and respec guide was published March 11, 2020.

Is one character strongest for endgame?
The available comparisons support recommendations by playstyle, not a current, controlled endgame ranking. They do not establish which Vault Hunter deals the most damage after the latest balance changes, or how gear and downloadable content affect relative strength. No sourced numerical comparison of character damage or win rate is available here, so a definitive claim that one character is strongest would go beyond the evidence.
