There is no single best wife for a vampire in Skyrim: the right choice depends on whether you want a vampire-themed spouse, a spouse you can turn into a vampire, or a useful follower. The key limitation is that Serana—the vampire companion most players think of first—cannot be married in the unmodded game. To have a vampire spouse in vanilla Dawnguard, marry an eligible NPC and complete the Volkihar quest The Gift; Lydia is specifically noted as a spouse who can work, though eligibility varies.
Can you marry Serana in vanilla Skyrim?
No. Serana is a vampire follower in the Dawnguard storyline, but the vanilla marriage system does not offer her as a spouse. Her vampire identity and companion role do not override the marriage roster. Mods can change that, but marrying Serana that way is modded gameplay, not an official base-game option. A Bethesda Creations mod listing explicitly says it enables Serana because vanilla does not allow it; availability and compatibility depend on your platform and setup.
How can you get a vampire wife in unmodded Dawnguard?
If your goal is for your spouse to become a vampire, marry an eligible candidate and pursue the Volkihar side of Dawnguard. Its quest The Gift concerns turning the player’s spouse into a vampire. The quest reference specifically notes that Lydia can work, but warns that not every spouse NPC triggers the quest. Treat Lydia as a documented option, not proof that every marriage candidate is eligible.
How to choose the best spouse for your playthrough
There is no established comprehensive ranking of Skyrim spouses for vampire characters. Choose based on the role you want the NPC to fill; being a vampire does not create a separate vanilla marriage roster.

- For vampire roleplay: Choose an eligible spouse you want to turn through The Gift. Lydia is the explicitly noted example, with the eligibility caveat above.
- For Serana as a companion: Keep her as a follower rather than planning on a vanilla marriage. If you frequently use Vampire Lord form, her presence has a gameplay drawback: Bethesda Support says she weakens the Drain Life spell while she is in your party and recommends not taking her along in that form.
- For follower utility: Consider follower availability separately from marriage. A character’s usefulness as a companion does not establish that they can marry you or become a vampire.
- For household or shop services: Check the specific NPC’s services rather than assuming all spouses offer the same utility. If your spouse is also following you, avoid selling items to them: Bethesda Support warns that the item may disappear without you receiving gold.
What to keep in mind before deciding
- Serana is not marriageable in vanilla Skyrim; marrying her requires a mod.
- The Gift offers a route to a vampire spouse, but the available quest reference does not say every spouse qualifies.
- Serana’s Vampire Lord Drain Life drawback matters when you bring her along in that form; it is separate from her marriage status.
- Do not treat a follower, spouse, and vampire-conversion candidate as interchangeable categories. Check the role and quest eligibility that matter to your playthrough.
