Ashley Johnson was the face reference for Ellie in the original The Last of Us. She voiced and performed the character using motion capture, and co-director and writer Neil Druckmann said Ellie’s face and much of her personality were based on Johnson. “Face model” is a useful shorthand, but it does not mean the sources identify her as the game’s sole 3D modeler or facial sculptor.
How Ashley Johnson shaped Ellie in the games
In a 2020 interview with The Washington Post, Druckmann said Johnson was used as a mold for Ellie’s face through motion-capture technology. He also credited her personality and humor as influences: “When we cast her, there were only a couple of scenes that were written. Afterwards, so much of Ellie was based on her personality and humor.” The Washington Post’s interview with Druckmann makes the distinction clear: Johnson informed the character’s likeness and performance, not just her voice.

Johnson described the experience in a 2013 interview with the official PlayStation.Blog. Seeing Ellie move with her body movements felt “very weird” but also exciting, she said. Her interview confirms her motion-capture work and reaction to seeing the performance translated into the game.
What “face model” does—and doesn’t—mean
The phrase can suggest a specific technical credit, such as the person who sculpted or built the final 3D face. The available reporting supports Johnson as Ellie’s face and performance reference, but does not name a single technical facial sculptor, scan vendor, or exclusive modeler.

It also distinguishes performance from visual-design roles. The Washington Post identifies Hyoung Taek Nam as the senior character concept artist who worked with Druckmann on Ellie’s original designs, and Ashley Swidowski as the lead character concept artist who designed Ellie in The Last of Us Part II. Those credits do not establish that either artist alone created the final in-game model.
Game Ellie and HBO Ellie are different performances
Ashley Johnson played Ellie in the games. Bella Ramsey plays Ellie in HBO’s television adaptation; Johnson also appeared in the series in a different role. If you mean the original game’s face reference, the answer is Johnson—not Ramsey. HBO’s cast listing identifies Ramsey with the television role.

Playing the original story
The Last of Us Part I is the PS5 remake of the original game. PlayStation lists its release date as September 2, 2022, and says it includes the Left Behind prequel chapter. See PlayStation’s official Part I page for the edition and platform details.
