They are the characters players follow, and they work together on heists and other criminal schemes. “Antiheroes” is a useful description of their role, not an official Rockstar label.
Protagonist and hero do not mean the same thing
A protagonist is a central character whose perspective the story follows. A hero, in the moral sense, is someone presented as good or admirable. GTA 5 gives players three protagonists; it does not give them a clear-cut moral hero.

Rockstar describes Michael, Franklin and Trevor as people with different issues, attitudes, lifestyles, desires and goals who nevertheless know how to work together. The Rockstar announcement establishes their shared narrative role, not an official moral ranking. The game’s manual likewise says many missions involve two or all three characters and describes their work together on heists and illicit income (Grand Theft Auto V – Game Help).
How the three protagonists differ
All three are playable leads, but their circumstances and motives are not the same. The character descriptions below reflect a secondary story synopsis, rather than an objective diagnosis or an official moral verdict.

| Character | Role and motivation | What that means for the “good guy” question |
|---|---|---|
| Michael De Santa | A professional ex-con whose retirement is less satisfying than he expected. | A family and suburban life do not make him morally good; he returns to heists with Franklin and Trevor. |
| Franklin Clinton | A street hustler looking for opportunities and serious money. | His ambition and desire for a way forward make him a relatable lead, not an innocent one. |
| Trevor Philips | A volatile criminal pursuing a high and another score. | He is the hardest of the three to call a conventional good guy, though that description is a character portrayal, not a clinical assessment. |
These summaries follow the published GTA V story synopsis. Rockstar’s official framing supports the distinction between the trio’s different goals and their ability to cooperate; it does not identify one as the “good one.”
Are Michael, Franklin or Trevor the hero?
There is no clear single hero among the trio. Players can sympathize with one character more than another, but the story’s central characters are criminals, and their cooperation does not erase the harm involved in their work. “Antihero” fits better than “good guy”: it describes a central character who lacks the traits of a straightforward moral hero.

Spoilers: what happens in the finale?
A secondary ending guide says Franklin’s final choice can lead to Trevor’s death, Michael’s death, or the Deathwish option, which saves all three. That is a choice among endings, not evidence that one protagonist is officially the good guy. The guide’s further claim about which ending is canon is not established here by an official source. See GTA Intel’s guide to GTA V’s three endings for its account of the choices.
