There is no universally best starter in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. For a story run, Fuecoco is a useful pick if you want to prioritize the recommended early Victory Road gyms, Sprigatito fits the Titan route, and Quaxly is a reasonable choice for Team Star. If you have no route-specific priority, choose the Pokémon whose design and final evolution you like best.
Which starter should you choose for a story playthrough?
The recommendation depends on which part of Paldea you want to tackle first. Nintendo Life’s route guide suggests these conditional picks for a story-mode run:
| Priority | Suggested starter | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Recommended early Victory Road gyms | Fuecoco | The guide points to favorable early gym matchups. |
| Titan fights | Sprigatito | The guide recommends its line for the Titan route. |
| Team Star | Quaxly | The guide considers it a reasonable fit for this route. |
These are story-mode recommendations from one editorial guide, not a universal ranking or a competitive-battling verdict. Scarlet and Violet’s open structure makes your route and priorities matter more than an all-purpose label of “best.” Nintendo Life’s starter guide
How do the three starter lines differ?
Each starter begins with a single type, then gains a second type in its final evolution. Those typings give the lines different strengths and weaknesses, but do not establish one overall winner.

| Starter | Starting type | Final evolution | Final typing | Story-mode distinction in Nintendo Life’s guide |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sprigatito | Grass | Meowscarada | Grass/Dark | Its final form is described as fast; recommended for the Titan route. |
| Fuecoco | Fire | Skeledirge | Fire/Ghost | Its line is described as slower but bulkier; recommended for the recommended early Victory Road gyms. |
| Quaxly | Water | Quaquaval | Water/Fighting | Its line is described as comparatively well-rounded; suggested for Team Star. |
Those speed and bulk descriptions are broad story-mode characterizations, not a substitute for comparing specific moves, matchups, or competitive formats. Nintendo Life’s starter guide
Does the most popular starter perform best?
No. Popularity polls measure what people chose or preferred in a particular sample, not battle strength. Nintendo Life reported a 2022 Famitsu survey in which 40.68% preferred Sprigatito, 35.43% Fuecoco, and 23.89% Quaxly. Those are launch-period preference figures, not evidence that Sprigatito is stronger. Nintendo Life’s report on the Famitsu survey

- Choose either Sprigatito, Fuecoco, or Quaxly, to be your first partner Pokémon before setting off on your journey through Paldea
A separate Pokémon Forums poll in 2024 had 15 votes: 40% for Sprigatito, 26% for Fuecoco, and 33% for Quaxly. Its small community sample is not representative of all players, and it should not be combined with the Famitsu result. Pokémon Forums poll
What if you mean competitive battling?
A story-route recommendation does not establish which starter is strongest in competitive play. The available evidence here does not provide current, format-specific usage data, so it cannot support a competitive ranking. For a competitive decision, compare the rules and format you plan to play rather than carrying over a story-mode recommendation.

- Only one code for a Hisuian Zoroark can be used in either the Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet game. Upon purchase of The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero DLC, an email with your code will be sent to the email address registered to your Nintendo Account. From the in-game menu, go to the Poké Portal, then select Mystery Gift, select Get with Code/Password, and then enter your code.
- The Mystery Gift option can be found within the Poké Portal menu option in the X menu after you unlock the feature in the Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet game. (This occurs after about 1 to 1.5 hours of gameplay, though individual gameplay time may vary.) An internet connection and a Nintendo Account is required to redeem the item in game. A Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required. Each item can only be redeemed once.
How to make the final choice
- Pick Fuecoco if you want to prioritize the recommended early Victory Road gyms.
- Pick Sprigatito if the Titan route is your priority.
- Pick Quaxly if you want a reasonable fit for Team Star.
- If none of those priorities decides it, choose the design and final evolution you enjoy most.
All three are valid choices; the route guide offers useful context, not a winner-takes-all answer. Nintendo Life’s starter guide
