Fairy Tail does not have one successor to Makarov. The answer depends on which absence you mean. After Makarov disappears, Macao Conbolt briefly becomes the guild’s fourth guild master. Later, while Makarov is still absent and former members rebuild the guild, Fairy Tail selects a seventh guild master. Makarov eventually returns to the role, so neither handover is a permanent succession.
Why “after Makarov” needs a time period
The question can mean two different moments: the point where Makarov first disappears, or the later period when the guild is being rebuilt without him. Each has its own replacement, and treating them as one succession is the most common source of confusion. Keep the two periods separate and the timeline makes sense.

The first handover: Macao Conbolt as fourth guild master
A Fairy Tail reference page, maintained by fans, identifies Macao Conbolt as the fourth guild master after Makarov’s disappearance. It presents this as an interim appointment, not a lasting change of leadership. Macao’s tenure is short, and the guild’s leadership question stays open until Makarov returns.
The later handover: the seventh guild master
The official Fairy Tail Final Series site describes episode 285, titled “The Seventh Guild Master.” Its synopsis says former Fairy Tail members gather to rebuild the guild, and that a guild master is required for Fairy Tail to be officially recognized while Makarov is absent. That establishes the context and the ordinal: the appointee is the seventh guild master in the guild’s numbering.

The synopsis available for this episode does not name the character who takes the role. If you need the name, check the episode itself rather than relying on the synopsis or the title. The title confirms the ordinal, not the identity.
Makarov’s return
Both interim arrangements give way to Makarov. The fan-maintained reference page states that he later returns to the guild-master position. That return is what makes the seventh-master appointment a stage in the story rather than the end of his leadership.

How to answer the question for a specific scene
- If the scene is right after Makarov disappears, the answer is Macao Conbolt as fourth guild master.
- If the scene shows former members rebuilding the guild and needing a guild master for official recognition, it is the seventh guild master, shown in episode 285.
- If the scene shows Makarov back in charge, the handovers are over and he is the guild master again.
Sources differ in how much detail they give. The official site confirms the rebuilding context and the seventh-master ordinal, while the fan-maintained reference page supplies the Macao and return details. Present these as reference-supported plot points rather than quotations from the official anime site, and avoid attributing any spoken line to a character unless you have checked the episode.
