Atomfall is worth playing if you want a survival-action game built around investigation rather than a checklist of objectives. Its strongest pull is its setting and the way it lets you piece events together yourself. Its clearest weakness, according to Tom’s Guide, is combat. Whether that trade-off suits you depends mostly on what you want to spend your time doing.
What Atomfall is
Atomfall is a single-player survival-action game from Rebellion. It is set in a fictional quarantine zone in Northern England, five years after the real Windscale nuclear disaster. PlayStation’s product page describes it as “a survival-action game inspired by real-life events,” and that wording matters. The game borrows atmosphere and history as inspiration. It is not a documentary account of Windscale, and its plot should not be read as a retelling of what happened there.

The official PlayStation listing describes exploring, scavenging, crafting, bartering, fighting, and talking your way through a mystery involving eccentric characters, mysticism, cults, and rogue government agencies. The Steam listing emphasizes the same core activities and frames the experience as a player-driven mystery.
Setting and atmosphere
The quarantine-zone premise is the element most reviewers and store descriptions lead with, and it is the reason to look at the game at all. Northern English folk-horror imagery, a retrofuturist layer of mystery, and an invented zone with its own factions give Atomfall a specific identity that many survival games lack. Tom’s Guide praised the original setting, the choice-driven narrative, and the exploration, and that praise is the strongest independent endorsement the game has in the sources reviewed for this article.

How the investigation plays
Atomfall does not present itself as a conventional linear quest. Official descriptions emphasize exploration, conversations, investigation, and choices, which means progress tends to come from following leads, questioning people, and connecting what you find. Expect to spend time working out where a thread goes next rather than being handed a marker to chase every time.
Scavenging, crafting, barter, and combat sit alongside that investigation. Each contributes to progression, so the same trip into the zone can serve several purposes: gathering supplies, talking to someone who may know something, and deciding whether a confrontation is worth the risk.

The combat caveat
Tom’s Guide identifies combat as the weakest area of the game. That is a single outlet’s judgment, not a consensus, and it should be weighed against the same review’s praise for the setting, narrative choice, and exploration. If you are drawn to Atomfall mainly for its fighting, the sources here do not suggest it will satisfy that appetite as well as its investigation does. If fights are a secondary part of the experience for you, the criticism matters less.
Difficulty and accessibility options
In an Xbox Wire article dated April 10, 2025, Rebellion accessibility designer Cari Watterton said the game includes options across motor, vision, audio, and cognition. These are the developer’s feature descriptions, not an independent accessibility audit.

- Preset playstyles: Five presets are available. Survivor is the default, Investigator leans further into survival, and Brawler emphasizes combat.
- Visual options: UI and gameplay contrast settings, plus text scaling up to 104px at 4K resolution.
- Audio options: Additional audio cues and directional indicators on subtitles.
- Navigation support: Adjustable navigation hints, flagged leads, and waypoint markers.
The navigation options are the practical lever for readers who find investigation games frustrating. Turning up guidance makes the zone easier to read; turning it down leaves more of the work to you. The sources do not describe how these settings change the story itself, so treat them as adjustments to how much you are guided, not as separate ways to experience the plot.
Editions, expansions, and platforms
Atomfall is listed for PS4 and PS5, with March 27, 2025 given as the release date on PlayStation’s listing. Two story expansions are associated with the game. Edition contents and bundle structure vary by storefront, so check the exact listing before paying for an upgrade or expansion.

- How much do you enjoy investigation and lead-following compared with directed missions?
- Does the setting and atmosphere hold your interest on its own?
- How much do you care about the feel of combat and enemy encounters?
- How much survival and resource-management pressure do you want?
- How much navigation guidance and accessibility customization do you need?
- Is the base game enough value for you, or do the expansions matter?
The sources establish these as relevant comparison points but do not rank Atomfall against any specific competing game. If you answer yes to the first two and are not put off by the combat criticism, the game is likely to reward you. If your interest is mainly in combat or in directed quest structure, it is less obviously a fit.
Buying notes
The direct product match is Atomfall for PS5, which PlayStation’s listing confirms. PS4 is an alternate platform. Retail price, physical stock, and current subscription-catalog status are not established in the sources reviewed here and can change, so confirm them at the point of purchase.
If you buy an expansion, check whether it is sold on its own or only through an edition or bundle, since the sources describe both paths for Wicked Isle.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Atomfall like Fallout?
Both are survival-action games set in a post-catastrophe world, but the sources do not establish a direct comparison or ranking between them. The more useful comparison is on the axes listed above: how much each game centers investigation, how strong its setting is, and how heavy its survival and combat systems feel. Atomfall’s identity rests on its Windscale-inspired quarantine zone and its investigation-led structure, so judge it on those terms rather than as a Fallout substitute.
The Bottom Line
Atomfall is a good choice if you want a distinctive, investigation-led survival game with a memorable setting and you are willing to accept clumsier combat. Tom’s Guide’s criticism of its fighting is the main reason to hesitate, and the rest of its design is built around the things it does best.
