Minecraft’s “dogs” are tamed wolves. If one is not teleporting to you, first make sure it is standing, then test while you are on solid ground. A lead or vehicle, a nearby target, an unloaded chunk, or a lack of safe landing space can also prevent it. Check these causes in order; don’t assume the wolf has despawned or that there is one universal teleport distance.
Check the wolf’s posture first
A sitting wolf does not follow you normally. Interact with it to make it stand, then move away and see whether it follows. In Java Edition, newly tamed wolves sit automatically, so a fresh tame may need this step before it will follow.
Test while standing on solid ground
Teleport eligibility can fail when you are not directly touching the ground. Swimming, flying, using an elytra, and riding in a boat are examples of movement states that can interfere. Come ashore or land, stand on solid ground, and try again.
Remove restraints and vehicles
A wolf attached to a lead or riding in a boat or minecart does not teleport under the documented rules. Release it from the lead or vehicle before testing.

Clear nearby distractions
A standing wolf focused on a target, such as a skeleton, may not teleport to you. Deal with the nearby threat, then check whether the wolf resumes following.
Give it room to land
The documented teleport check looks for a candidate spot at the edge of a 5-by-5 region around the player. That spot needs a transparent block, solid support underneath, and open space above. If you are in a cramped enclosure or surrounded by unsuitable blocks, move to ordinary solid ground with open space and test again.

Return toward the wolf’s last location
If you travelled away quickly, the wolf may be in an unloaded chunk. It cannot teleport while its chunk is unloaded. Walk back toward where you last saw it so the area can load, then make sure it is standing and try again.

The detailed mechanics reference is a Minecraft Wiki content mirror, not an official Mojang specification. Microsoft’s Bedrock follow-range documentation describes a configurable AI concept for pursuit; it does not establish a universal wolf teleport threshold or prove that Java and Bedrock use identical teleport rules. Avoid relying on a single distance limit as the explanation.

Older bug reports are version-specific, not evidence of a current general rule. A Mojang report records wolves swimming rather than teleporting in water in Java 1.14.4: MC-158133. A separate tracker result describes a pet teleport regression from the 1.14.4 era and says it was fixed in Java snapshot 19w37a, but the tracker now redirects to login: MC-158105. These reports should not be taken to mean that current versions share those issues.
