If no mobs are spawning in Minecraft Bedrock, the cause is almost always one of the rules that gate natural spawning: the difficulty setting, whether mob spawning is enabled, the mob’s biome, light level, spawn surface, distance from players, or the population cap. Microsoft’s official documentation describes these as spawn conditions. It cannot tell you which one applies in your world without your settings, game version, add-ons, and server details, so the checks below run from the most common cause to the least common.
Match the symptom to the mechanic first
Before changing anything, work out which mobs are missing and where. The pattern usually points to the rule that is responsible.
| Symptom | Mechanic to check first | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Hostile mobs (zombies, skeletons, creepers) never appear | Difficulty | Microsoft’s spawn rules reference (last updated 2026-05-12) lists difficulty as a filter and uses hostile mobs on Peaceful as its example of a blocked spawn. |
| No mobs of any kind appear anywhere | Mob spawning setting in world or server options | Spawning cannot happen if the setting is off. The official pages reviewed do not confirm the exact menu label for every version, so check your version’s world options. |
| Animals or one mob type missing in one area only | Biome, light, height, and the block under the spawn location | Spawn rules can filter by biome, brightness, height, and spawn surface, so a location can be valid for one mob and invalid for another. |
| Mobs missing only near your farm or base | Player distance and population cap | Spawn eligibility depends on distance from players, and loaded chunks have a cap on how many monsters can exist. |
| Missing mobs only in a custom world or add-on | Add-on spawn rules and population control | Custom entities need correct identifiers and spawn-rule files. A mistake in these will stop the entity without any error message in the game. |
Step-by-step checks
- Set difficulty away from Peaceful. If hostile mobs are the only missing type, change the difficulty in your world settings and return to a dark area at night. Peaceful blocks hostile spawns entirely, so this is the fastest test.
- Confirm mob spawning is enabled. Open the world options for a single-player world or the server configuration for a multiplayer world and make sure the mob spawning option is on. The official sources reviewed do not document the exact label or location in every edition, so use the option name your version shows.
- Test a different location. Move to a biome where the mob is known to spawn, such as a plains or forest biome for passive animals, or a dark cave area for hostile mobs. If the mob appears there, the original location is the problem, not the world. Check that the block under the spawn point is a valid surface for that mob and that the brightness is low enough for hostile mobs.
- Check distance and simulation distance. Microsoft’s spawn rules reference describes a typical distance filter range of 24 to 128 blocks. Separately, the Bedrock 1.16.0 release notes, published by Minecraft Feedback on 2020-06-23, state that “Almost all naturally spawning mobs will automatically despawn when they’re 44 blocks or further away from the nearest players in a world with simulation distance 4.” On higher simulation distances, the same notes describe despawning at the edge of simulation distance, up to 128 blocks.
These two descriptions cover different things. The 24-to-128-block figure is a spawn-eligibility filter, while the 1.16.0 note describes despawning and is historical, so it should not be read as a universal spawn radius for current versions. The sources do not establish a single best simulation distance for every player, so change one setting at a time and test the result.
- Look for population caps. Microsoft’s Entity Spawning Deep Dive (last updated 2026-01-28) describes a typical monster cap of about 70 in loaded chunks. Treat that as approximate creator guidance rather than a fixed in-game count, since the actual cap depends on configuration. Other entities that share the same cap, such as a mob farm that keeps monsters loaded, can use up the space and stop new spawns.
- Validate custom spawn rules. For add-on creators, check the entity identifier, the spawn-rules file, and the biome, brightness, block, and population-control settings. This is guidance for custom entity creation. It is not a complete diagnostic for ordinary player settings.
Common causes in mob farms
Farms are the case where distance and population caps matter most, because they keep mobs in a small area. A farm that works in a stopped or distant world can fail when the chunks are unloaded, or when mobs are cleared too quickly. Check the simulation distance and the monster cap first, and then confirm the spawn surface and light level inside the farm.

What to note if the cause is still unclear
If the checks above do not explain the problem, record the details that the official documentation depends on: the Bedrock version, the platform, the difficulty, whether mob spawning is on, the simulation distance, the biome and light level where mobs should appear, any installed add-ons, and whether the world is single-player or on a server. Those details are what separate a settings problem from an add-on or server problem.
