Why Are My Traded Pokémon Not Obeying Me in FireRed?

In Pokémon FireRed, traded Pokémon obey only up to a level set by your Gym Badges. Here are the limits, how to check your Pokémon, and why it sometimes obeys.

In Pokémon FireRed, a traded Pokémon ignores your commands because the game caps how high a level an outsider Pokémon can be and still follow orders reliably. That cap rises as you earn Gym Badges. If the Pokémon’s current level is above your limit, it may ignore a command, choose a different move, fall asleep, or hit itself in confusion. Earning the next badge raises the ceiling. This is the badge-based obedience rule working as designed, not a sign that the trade or your save file is broken.

How the obedience limit works

The rule applies to outsider Pokémon: those obtained from another trainer or from another game, including Pokémon received in trades. Your Gym Badges set the highest level at which these Pokémon will reliably obey. The limit is checked against the Pokémon’s current level, not the level it had when you received it, so a traded Pokémon can cross the line later simply by gaining experience.

Badges held Obedience limit for outsider Pokémon
No badges Level 10
Cascade Badge (Misty) Level 30 and below
Rainbow Badge (Erika) Level 50
Marsh Badge (Sabrina) Level 70
Earth Badge All Pokémon

The no-badge level 10 limit comes from the mechanics reference maintained by the Bulbapedia community. The Cascade, Rainbow, Marsh and Earth thresholds come from Nintendo’s FireRed instruction booklet. The booklet’s wording for the Cascade Badge reads:

“Causes all Pokémon Level 30 and below to obey you, even if you got them in a trade.”

Pokémon FireRed Version Standard - Nintendo Switch [Digital Code]
  • Set off on a grand adventure to become the Pokémon League Champion—now on Nintendo Switch!
  • Celebrate 30 years of Pokémon with this Nintendo Switch version* of the Pokémon FireRed Version game originally released on the Game Boy Advance system!
  • Additional games and systems required for multiplayer mode. Sold separately. 2004 Pokémon. 1995-2004 Nintendo/Creatures Inc./GAME FREAK inc. Pokémon and Nintendo Switch are trademarks of Nintendo.

The booklet gives the same kind of description for the Rainbow and Marsh Badges at levels 50 and 70, and states that the Earth Badge makes all Pokémon obey. The text for the first badge, the Boulder Badge, is not reproduced reliably in the printed material available, so check the in-game description of each badge if you need its exact wording.

Checking your traded Pokémon

  1. Confirm the Pokémon is an outsider. If it came from another trainer or from another game, the limit applies. Pokémon you caught or hatched yourself in FireRed are not checked this way.
  2. Read its current level. Open the Pokémon menu, select the Pokémon, and check the level shown on its summary screen.
  3. Count your badges. Use the highest badge you hold, since each badge raises the limit.
  4. Compare the two numbers. If the level is at or below the limit from the table, the Pokémon should obey reliably.
  5. Earn the badge that clears it. If the level is above the limit, the next badge that raises the ceiling above that level is the fix. For example, a traded Level 35 Pokémon with the Cascade Badge is above its level 30 limit, so it needs the Rainbow Badge (limit 50) before you rely on it in ordinary battles.

Why it sometimes obeys anyway

The badge limit is a ceiling for reliable obedience, not an all-or-nothing lockout. A Pokémon above its limit can follow a command on one turn and disobey on the next, which is why the behavior looks inconsistent. The same Pokémon may also obey for a while after leveling up if it is still under the limit, then start disobeying once it crosses above it.

What disobedience looks like

When a traded Pokémon is above its limit, it may do any of the following instead of the move you selected:

  • Do nothing for the turn.
  • Fall asleep.
  • Hit itself in confusion and take damage.
  • Use a different move from the one you chose.

Troubleshooting a Pokémon that is under its limit

If the Pokémon is at or below the limit for your badge count and still refuses orders, no separate documented glitch explains it in the reference material. Confirm the game version you are playing and read the in-game description of your most recent badge before assuming something is wrong with the save.

Which version you are playing

Nintendo’s support FAQ says the Switch and Switch 2 versions of FireRed broadly keep the original game contents, use local wireless for connectivity, and are digital-only with no physical release. The FAQ does not cover the obedience mechanic, so the limits above come from the original FireRed booklet and reference documentation rather than from the current release. When you compare trading notes with someone, state which version you are using, since the obedience rules are described for the original game.
