Villager prices usually go up for one of three reasons. A trade you use or sell out often can rise because of demand. In Java Edition, your personal reputation with a specific villager can raise or lower prices. In Bedrock Edition, a discount tied to curing a zombie villager or a temporary Hero of the Village effect can change what you pay. Which one applies depends on your edition, your game version, and whether the change affects one trade or several.
Start with the scope of the price change
The pattern of higher prices tells you more than anything else. Match your situation to the list below before assuming a cause.
- One trade got more expensive after you used it heavily or sold out: demand is the most likely cause. See the demand section below.
- Several trades with the same villager cost more, while other villagers of the same profession do not: in Java Edition, check that villager’s reputation toward you.
- A discount disappeared after a raid or after a recent event: the Hero of the Village effect is temporary, so it may have simply expired.
- You are on Bedrock and cured the same zombie villager several times: the repeat-cure discount no longer grows in the release Mojang documented in 1.20.30.
- None of the above matches: confirm your edition, exact version, experimental settings, and whether add-ons or server plugins change trading.
Demand: why a single trade gets more expensive
The community-maintained Trading article on the Minecraft Wiki (accessed 8 October 2026, via a mirror) describes demand as tracked per trade listing. That means a heavily used or sold-out item can change its price without affecting every trade a villager offers, or every villager in your world. Mojang’s 2019 Java release note also states that trading prices depend on reputation and demand.
Demand-based pricing applies to the listing itself. The same article notes that price fluctuation affects the first item in a trade and that trades have quantity limits, so check which ingredient changed before you conclude the whole trade is inflated. The sources reviewed for this article do not give a reset timer for demand-based prices, so do not plan around a specific number of in-game days.

Java Edition: reputation with each villager
Java Edition adds a personal layer. Mojang’s 2019 Java Village & Pillage note says prices depend on reputation and demand. The Minecraft Wiki Trading article describes Java-only reputation discounts and penalties tied to the individual player. Harming villagers can lower reputation, and trading or curing can improve it.
A practical test: if one villager’s prices are higher than identical villagers nearby, reputation is the likelier cause. Trade with that villager over time, and cure a zombie villager if you have one, since both actions are described as improving reputation. Avoid hitting or killing villagers near the trades you need, because that can push prices up.

Bedrock Edition: curing discounts and Hero of the Village
Curing a zombie villager
The Bedrock Wiki page on discount and curing mechanics describes discounts from curing a zombie villager directly and from curing nearby. The page’s numeric values are not confirmed by Mojang’s official notes, so do not treat any specific percentage as a universal current figure.

Repeat cures no longer stack
Mojang’s Minecraft 1.20.30 Bedrock release note (19 September 2023) states: “The discount for curing a Zombie Villager no longer increases when the same Villager is reinfected and cured multiple times.” That is the official behavior for that release. The same note identifies the trade rebalance as experimental in 1.20.30, so check whether experimental trade rebalancing is enabled in your world before assuming it applies to you.
Hero of the Village
Both the community Trading article and the Bedrock Wiki describe Hero of the Village as a temporary discount effect. If prices rose after a raid ended or after the effect ran out, this is the likeliest explanation. The sources do not establish the exact duration in this article, so check the in-game status effect rather than relying on a fixed time.

Edition and version comparison
The table below shows which causes each source actually establishes. Where a source is silent, the cell says so rather than assuming the mechanic exists.

Checking your setup, step by step
- Write down your edition (Java or Bedrock) and the exact game version number. Price behavior described for one release may not match another.
- Compare the same trade with a different villager of the same profession. If only one villager is expensive, look at reputation in Java or villager-specific curing history in Bedrock.
- Check whether the trade was used heavily or sold out recently. If the price rose only on that listing, demand is the likely cause.
- Check whether a raid recently ended or the Hero of the Village effect expired. A temporary discount running out can look like a price increase.
- Check your world settings for experimental trade rebalancing, and note any add-ons or server plugins that change trading.
- If you are on Bedrock and cured the same zombie villager repeatedly, expect the discount to stay the same after the first cures, per the 1.20.30 note.
When the explanation still does not fit
If none of these checks match your situation, the most likely gap is a missing detail: the exact version, an experimental setting, or a modded or server-side change. Without those details, any exact formula or bug diagnosis would be a guess. Report the edition, version, trade, and villager details to the server or add-on author, or compare against the official Minecraft release notes for your version.
