Traditional sports have a clear, well-documented advantage over esports on one measure: built-in physical activity and the health and fitness benefits that come with it. On other measures, such as skill development, teamwork, and fair-play values, esports share much of the same ground. Whether sports are “better” therefore depends on which outcome you are judging, and the evidence does not support a single overall ranking.
Where sports have the strongest case
The most solid argument for sports is physical. Expert consensus published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine in 2011 reviewed the health and fitness effects of physical activity and sport in young people and found benefits that are central to the case for organised athletic participation. Physical sports generally require the body to move as part of taking part. Most conventional screen-based esports do not, although the amount of movement varies widely by discipline.

Population context points in the same direction. A World Health Organization estimate from 2022, relayed in a joint WHO and International Olympic Committee announcement dated 13 June 2023, reported that one in four adults and over 80% of young people did not meet recommended minimum activity levels. That figure describes the population as a whole. It does not show that esports players are less active than sports players, and it should not be read that way.
Where esports hold their own
Esports are not simply the opposite of sport. A peer-reviewed article in Frontiers in Sports and Active Living (2022), which examines esports governance and values, identifies meritocracy, competition, fair play, and a level playing field as values esports share with traditional sport. Its abstract puts the point this way: “In many respects, esports ‘act’ and ‘behave’ just like traditional sports.” That is the authors’ characterisation, not an official finding of the IOC.

The same analysis notes that the IOC’s 2021 Olympic Virtual Series included virtual baseball, cycling, rowing, sailing, and motor racing, several of them closely modelled on physical counterparts. This blurs the line between sport and esports. Some virtual sport formats involve physical activity, and not every esports activity is sedentary.
Esports also involve practice, structured competition, and teamwork. These are real developmental benefits. The sources reviewed support them as shared values, but they do not measure whether esports produce these outcomes to the same degree as physical sport.

The costs of physical sport
Sport is not automatically healthy. A 2016 IOC expert consensus statement in the British Journal of Sports Medicine on training load and injury risk links poor load management with injury and illness. It recommends monitoring athletes’ training and competition load and their wellbeing. The risk is greatest when training is increased too quickly or recovery is inadequate.
A 2015 IOC consensus on youth athletic development, also in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, makes a related point. The benefits of youth sport depend on participation that is healthy, inclusive, and sustainable. Taking part in sport should not be equated automatically with elite performance, or with an absence of harm.

Comparing the outcomes
Because the question turns on the criterion, the most useful way to compare the two is outcome by outcome:
| Outcome | Traditional sport | Esports | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physical activity and fitness | Generally involves bodily movement as part of participation; amount varies by sport | Conventional screen-based formats often involve little movement; some virtual sport formats include physical activity | Clearest advantage for sport, per the 2011 IOC consensus; discipline-specific differences apply |
| Skill and competition | Practice and competition are core elements | Practice and competition are core elements | Shared features identified in the 2022 Frontiers analysis; no comparative measure of skill outcomes in the sources reviewed |
| Fair play and shared values | Meritocracy, competition, fair play, level playing field | Same values identified by the 2022 Frontiers analysis | Shared values reported by authors of a peer-reviewed article; not an IOC ruling |
| Injury and training-load risk | Injury and illness risk when load is poorly managed | Not stated for comparable injury or load risk | 2016 IOC consensus on training load; no quantified comparison with esports |
| Inactivity concerns | Not applicable to sport participants as a group | Discussed in esports debates; not quantified in the sources reviewed | WHO 2022 population estimates do not compare sports and esports players |
| Access and inclusion | Varies by sport, cost, and location; not stated in a broad comparison | Varies by format and platform; not stated in a broad comparison | 2015 IOC consensus supports inclusive youth sport; no direct access comparison found |
What the evidence does not establish
No study reviewed here measures sports and esports side by side across health, learning, social connection, and enjoyment. The sources cover physical activity, youth sport, injury load, and the values esports share with sport, but they do not produce a comprehensive ranking. Claims that sports are universally superior, or that esports are harmful in themselves, go beyond what the evidence supports.

The phrase “sports” also covers activities with very different physical demands, and “esports” covers many games and formats. Comparisons should specify which sport and which game, at what intensity and frequency.
Quick Recap
How to judge the question for your own situation
- If your priority is physical health and fitness: physical sport has the stronger evidence base, provided training load is managed and recovery is adequate.
- If your priority is competition, strategy, or teamwork without physical strain: esports offer comparable structure and shared values, although the evidence does not show identical developmental outcomes.
- If you are choosing for a young person: look for healthy, inclusive, sustainable participation, and check that the activity leaves room for movement and rest.
- If you are comparing virtual and physical versions of the same sport: check the format. Some virtual sport formats involve physical activity, others do not.
