An Xbox One disc may not work because it is damaged, the game is not supported, the problem is specific to movie playback, or the console is having trouble reading discs. First identify whether you have an Xbox One game, an Xbox 360 game, a DVD, or a Blu-ray; each calls for a different check.
Identify what kind of disc is failing
Start with the disc and the symptom. Is it an Xbox One game, an Xbox 360 game, a DVD, or a Blu-ray? Does the console fail to recognize it, or does a game or movie fail later during launch or playback? Xbox Support separates game-disc troubleshooting from Blu-ray and DVD playback guidance, so a movie problem should not be treated as a game-compatibility issue.

- Xbox One game: Check whether the console recognizes and launches the game disc.
- Xbox 360 game: Verify that the exact title is backward compatible with Xbox One.
- DVD or Blu-ray: Use Xbox’s movie-playback guidance rather than game troubleshooting.
Microsoft’s support pages include troubleshooting for disc games and Blu-ray and DVD playback guidance. The current instructions may change, so follow the steps on the relevant support page.
Check whether an Xbox 360 game is supported
Xbox One supports selected Xbox 360 titles, not every Xbox 360 game. Search for the exact title in Microsoft’s backward-compatibility catalog. If the game is not listed as compatible, a disc that does not launch does not by itself indicate a faulty drive.

Inspect and care for the disc
Look at the disc for visible dirt or damage, and handle it by the edges. Microsoft’s Xbox One X manual advises returning discs to their cases, keeping them away from direct sunlight and heat, and following its cleaning directions. These are care guidelines, not a guarantee that cleaning will resolve a disc or console reading problem.
Compare one disc with another
If you have another disc that you know is supported, compare how the console responds to it. A problem limited to one disc makes that disc the first thing to investigate; if several known-supported discs fail, the issue may involve the console’s ability to read discs. This comparison is a practical way to narrow the possibilities, not a verified Microsoft-mandated diagnostic sequence.

For multiple failing discs, use the current Xbox disc-game troubleshooting and support path. Avoid assuming that a reset, storage clear, drive adjustment, or cleaning kit is the right fix unless Xbox Support specifically directs you to it.

In an August 26, 2026 announcement, Microsoft introduced a disc-to-digital entitlement for supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X games. Microsoft said, “Most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support this new feature,” but eligibility is not universal. The announcement says the physical disc continues to work as before; the feature does not remove the need for a working disc drive for ordinary disc-based play. Microsoft’s digital-goods rules also say not all discs qualify and that a limited entitlement depends on continued possession of a qualifying disc.
