If Nintendo Switch DLC isn’t working, first check that it matches the exact base game and sales region. Then confirm the Nintendo Account that bought it is available on the console, its virtual game card is set there, and the game was fully closed so the download could finish.
1. Confirm the DLC matches the game you own
DLC requires its corresponding base game. That game may be a physical game card or a digital copy, but the add-on must be for the correct title and, where applicable, the correct edition. Check the DLC’s Nintendo eShop product listing for the required game. Nintendo’s DLC compatibility guidance explains that the base game must be present for the content to work.
- For a physical copy, insert the game card and start the game once to confirm it is the version the DLC requires.
- For a digital copy, confirm the correct game is available on the console.
- If the DLC is for a different edition or release of the game, ownership of a similarly named title may not be enough.
2. Check the sales region of the game and DLC
A game card from another country may run on your Switch, but that does not guarantee that DLC bought from a different country will work with it. Nintendo says software and downloadable content are intended for use with the same sales or distribution country and warns that combinations from different countries may be incompatible. If you have an imported game card, check where that copy was sold and compare it with the country or region associated with the DLC. Do not assume that matching game titles mean the regional versions are interchangeable.

3. Verify the purchase and the Nintendo Account
Digital purchases are associated with the Nintendo Account used to buy them. Check that account’s order history on the Nintendo Account website, or find the purchase confirmation email. Nintendo says deleting a user from a console or changing consoles does not erase the account’s purchase history, but you need the purchasing account linked to access its content. Nintendo’s purchase-history and redownload information describes where to check.
Web purchase records show only the previous two years, so look for the confirmation email if the purchase is older. If the DLC is not in the expected account’s history, check other Nintendo Accounts that may have made the purchase before concluding it is missing.

4. Check the DLC’s virtual game card
On the Switch, confirm that the virtual game card for the account that purchased the DLC is set on the console. Nintendo says users on a console where the purchased DLC’s virtual game card is set can use that digital content, subject to Nintendo’s stated conditions. If it is not available on this console, use the purchasing account to access or redownload the content. See Nintendo’s virtual game card and redownload guidance.
5. Close the game so a new purchase can install
If you bought DLC while the base game was open, installation may wait until the game is closed. Press the HOME button, highlight the running game, press X, and choose Close. Allow the download or installation to finish, then start the game again. Nintendo’s downloadable-content troubleshooting steps note that DLC installation occurs while the base game is closed.

6. Install the latest available system update
Open System Settings from the HOME Menu, select System, then choose System Update. If an update is available, install it and check the DLC again. Nintendo recommends updating when the system software is behind. The latest listing available for this article reports version 23.0.0, released September 10, 2026; check the console for the latest release available to you. If the DLC still will not work, gather these details before contacting Nintendo Support. They help distinguish a compatibility problem from an account or installation issue.

- The DLC’s exact name and the country or region where the game and DLC were sold.
- The Nintendo Account that made the purchase and whether the purchase appears in its history or confirmation email.
- The console being used, whether the virtual game card is set there, and any error message shown.
Check the purchase record and compatibility before paying for the DLC again. If a redownload is unavailable, Nintendo identifies an unlinked purchasing account and the end of redownload distribution as possible reasons; its purchase and redownload guidance explains the relevant limits.
