Most often, a friend cannot join because the server owner has not allowed that account, or the friend’s own privacy or age settings restrict private-server access. Check the server’s Configure menu first, then the joining player’s privacy settings; if both allow access, check how they are trying to join and whether Roblox or the device is temporarily having trouble.
1. Check who the server allows
Open the experience’s Servers section, find your private server, open its menu, and choose Configure. Make sure Friends Allowed is enabled, or add the intended players individually by their Roblox usernames. Roblox says a private-server owner can allow their friends list or add up to 50 individual users. See Roblox’s Private / VIP Servers FAQ.
Being your friend on Roblox does not necessarily mean the server is configured to admit them: the server owner’s access list is a separate control.
2. Have the friend check their private-server settings
Access can also be blocked by the joining player’s account settings, even when the owner has allowed them. Ask each friend who cannot join to open Settings → Privacy & content restrictions → Visibility & private servers → Private servers and review who is allowed to add them to a private server.

Roblox identifies restrictive privacy settings as a possible cause of Error Code 524. The setting belongs to the friend who is trying to join, so the owner cannot change it on their behalf.
3. Check age and parental controls
Roblox’s Private / VIP Servers FAQ says users under 13 can join friends’ private servers by default, and only their friends can join their private servers. As a result, a player under 13 may be unable to join if they are not friends with the server owner, even if the owner meant to invite them.

Parental controls can also restrict private servers. Roblox’s Parental Controls Overview lists a Private Servers choice of Friends or Off. If the account is managed by a parent, have the parent review that control.
4. Check the join method
If your friend is trying to join through your profile or current activity rather than through the server invitation or server page, visibility and join permissions may be involved. Roblox separates who can see your current experience from who can join you in an experience. Review Show current experience and the relevant join-in-experience setting under Online Status and Visibility.

Roblox’s instructions for following or joining another player also note that the experience’s permissions still apply. A visible profile or activity does not by itself grant access to a private server.

Error Code 524—often shown with the message “You do not have permission to join this game”—is a useful clue, not proof that a particular setting is wrong. Roblox says the error typically indicates missing permission, but also lists temporary server unavailability and network or device glitches as possible causes in its Error Code 524 guidance.

- Close and reopen Roblox; if needed, restart the device.
- Check that the device has a working internet connection.
- If the issue persists, return to the owner and player permission checks before assuming it is a network problem.
