You can’t freely choose any champion in matchmade ARAM because the mode assigns champions at random. You do get a limited choice: Riot’s Champion Cards show two options during the first 12 seconds of champion select, and a Blessed Card may sometimes add a third. You can also choose from your team’s bench or trade with a teammate who agrees.
Why ARAM doesn’t offer unrestricted champion selection
ARAM means “All Random All Mid.” In matchmade games, a random champion is assigned to each player; the mode is not Blind Pick or Draft Pick. Riot says the champion pool includes champions from the last five weekly free-to-play rotations, including the current rotation, as well as champions on players’ own rosters. Riot’s ARAM Game Mode guide describes the format and its selection rules.
That random assignment is the basis of the mode, but it doesn’t mean you have no say in the champion you play. Champion Cards, the team bench and voluntary trades provide limited ways to change your pick.

Pick from your Champion Cards
Riot’s guide says you can choose between two Champion Cards within the first 12 seconds of champion select. Select the card for the champion you want before that window ends.

Look for a third card
A Blessed Card may provide a third option. Riot lists the chance as a 5% base chance plus 0.15% for each champion you own; that is a chance with an account-roster increment, not a guaranteed third card.
Check the team bench
A champion you don’t choose goes to your team’s bench. A teammate can select a champion from the bench, so check there if the champion you want is available.

Ask a teammate to trade
You can trade champions with a teammate if they agree. This is a voluntary swap, not a way to select a champion outside the options available to your team.
How to try for a different champion
- During champion select, choose one of your two Champion Cards within the first 12 seconds.
- If a Blessed Card appears, consider its third champion option.
- Check the team bench for a champion you would rather play.
- Ask the teammate holding that champion to trade. The swap depends on their agreement.
Riot’s support guide documents these options; it does not describe a setting that enables unrestricted champion selection in matchmade ARAM.

Can you play ARAM as Blind Pick or Draft Pick?
Not in matchmade ARAM. Riot says Blind Pick and Draft Pick are available in custom games, rather than the matchmade queue. If your group wants to use one of those selection formats, create a custom game; it won’t be the standard matchmade ARAM experience. Riot says prior tests found fewer players chose those pick modes than the random format, but does not provide a sample size or a specific test date.
