A household that won’t load in The Sims 4 usually comes down to one of three things: a mod or custom content that has become incompatible, a single damaged save, or a problem with the game installation or the EA app. The title alone can’t tell you which. The fastest route is to back up your files first, then narrow the failure down by scope: one household, all saves, or the game never reaching the main menu.
Back up your Sims 4 user folder before you change anything
Every troubleshooting step below involves moving, removing, or restoring files. Copy the whole Sims 4 user folder somewhere safe before you start. On Windows this is normally found under Documents, in the Electronic Arts folder, then The Sims 4. Keep the copy until the household loads again.
EA’s official reset guide describes a method for testing the game without saves and without mods, then adding folders and individual save files back in stages. That method isolates the source of the problem. It does not tell you the cause in advance, so treat each result as evidence, not a verdict.
Find out how far the problem reaches
Before running any fix, note exactly what happens. The answer determines which branch to follow.
#1 Best Overall
- Requires The Sims 4 & all game updates. For PC, see minimum system requirements for the pack.
- Create Vampires
- Unleash Supernatural Powers
- Escape to Forgotten Hollow
- Live the Immortal Life
| What you see | What it suggests | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| Only one household fails; other saves load normally | A single save file or a content conflict tied to that household | Save-file isolation (see below) |
| Every save fails, but the game reaches the main menu | Mods or custom content, or a patch that changed how existing content behaves | Mod test on PC or Mac |
| The game never opens from the EA app | A launch or installation problem, separate from any household | EA app launch and repair path |
| The game runs, but one Sim is frozen or unresponsive | A stuck individual Sim, not a failed household load | Stuck-Sim reset, used only while the game is running |
Also note your platform. Mods are a PC and Mac feature according to EA’s installation guidance, so console players can skip the mod steps entirely.
Test with mods and custom content removed
If the failure affects every save and you use mods on PC or Mac, start here. EA warns that mods which worked before can become incompatible after an update. Its mods and updates article states: “Since we don’t screen or support any Mods, it’s possible a Mod that didn’t cause any issues for players before could cause them after an update.”

- Requires The Sims 4 & all game updates. For PC, see minimum system requirements for the pack.
- Develop Parenting Skills – Level up your Sim’s parenting skills to satisfy their child’s needs and influence their behaviors. Gain new abilities through experience and choosing when to discipline bad actions, encourage good behavior, or just let kids be kids.
- Shape Your Sim’s Childhood – The decisions you make influence how your Sim parents and leave a lasting impact on their child’s future. Each choice shapes their personality, affects their traits, influences their family relationships, and guides their path into adulthood.
- Gather your Sim’s family to participate in new activities and spend quality time with each other. Sims of all ages can work together to complete a variety of school projects, express their creativity using construction blocks, or volunteer their time for good.
- Customize your Sims’ looks and their home with new family fashion and build items. Give the kids’ bedrooms extra personality, remodel the kitchen to feel homier, and let your Sims express their sporty or artistic sides with new outfits.
- Close the game without saving. Saving while mods are disabled can remove custom content from the save, and that loss may not be reversible from the game.
- Move your Mods folder and any custom content out of the Sims 4 user folder, or disable them, so the game starts without them.
- Launch the game and try to load a household. If it loads, the cause is in the mods or custom content.
- Check the creators’ pages for update notes or compatibility information for each mod. Mods last updated before a recent game patch are the most likely to conflict.
- Restore the mods in small batches, starting the game and loading a household after each batch. Once a batch causes the failure, remove or update the mods in that batch.
Do not save while any mods are disabled during this test. Exit without saving each time.
Check the clean test before you isolate saves
If the game still fails to load a household with mods removed, EA’s reset guide says the cause was not the removed saves or downloaded content. At that point, stop isolating saves and move on to game and launcher troubleshooting. If the clean test works, return to your backup and restore the folders and then individual save files one at a time, testing after each restore. This finds a single failing file without leaving a broken save in place.

Isolate a single failing save
When only one household fails, restore backed-up save files one at a time and test after each. The file that causes the failure is the one that breaks the load. Replace it with its backup copy or stop using that save.
If you need an earlier point in that household’s progress, use the in-game save recovery function. Two limits apply. EA distinguishes manual saves from autosaves, and older autosaves cannot be recovered. Recovery therefore works only for saves that still exist in your files, so keep manual saves and your backup folder.

Fix an EA app launch failure separately
If the game does not open at all from the EA app, the problem is in the launch path, not in your household. EA’s current PC and Mac guidance includes repairing game files through the EA app. Use the launcher-specific help for that step. Repairing the game does not change your saves, but keep the backup in place until the game opens normally.
Do not treat a launcher failure as a household problem. Testing saves will not fix an installation that never starts.

Why a stuck-Sim reset is not the household fix
The resetSim and Reset Object (Debug) actions are for an individual Sim who is stuck or unresponsive after the game has loaded. EA notes that resetting a Sim does not return them to their home lot. Use these actions only while the game is running and one Sim is frozen. They are not a fix for an entire household stuck on the loading screen.
Order of steps
- Note whether one household or every save fails, and whether the game reaches the main menu.
- Back up the Sims 4 user folder.
- On PC or Mac with mods, run the mod test with everything disabled and exit without saving.
- If the clean test works, restore folders and then individual saves one at a time.
- If the clean test fails, move to the EA app launch and repair path.
- Use save recovery for an earlier point, keeping in mind that older autosaves cannot be recovered.
The steps are ordered so that each one protects data before the next one changes anything.
