Check them in that order, because a problem on the server side can’t be fixed from your home network, and changing router settings before confirming the service is up wastes time.
The official Activision guidance for this problem is a 2019 support article, so some menu names and status pages may have changed. Use its steps as a framework and confirm current instructions on your platform’s own support pages.
Step 1: Check whether the service is down
Start with the Black Ops III server status page. Activision’s support article for connecting to the game tells players to check game server status first. If the status shows an alert or a non-operational state, the problem is on the service side. Wait for it to be restored and try again later rather than changing your network.
If the game status looks clear but you’re still signed in and unable to connect, check your platform’s status page for alerts or maintenance:

Step 2: Confirm both accounts and the console or PC connection
Connection problems can start with one player’s account rather than the lobby itself. Before testing anything else:

- Confirm that the system account is signed in on both consoles, or that you’re signed in to the correct platform account on PC.
- Run the platform’s network test from the system settings. Activision’s article gives menu paths for PS4, Xbox One, PS3, and Xbox 360. On PC, follow Steam’s current network troubleshooting guidance rather than a console-style procedure.
- Write down the exact error message or code. It helps you tell a lobby-level failure from a general connectivity failure, and it’s the first thing support will ask for.
If one player can’t connect to anything online, focus on that player’s account and network path. If the two of you can’t join each other but both can use other online features, the problem is more likely a peer connection between your two networks.
Step 3: Run basic home-network checks
Activision recommends three basic steps:
- Restart the router. Activision Support states: “Restarting your router is often the easiest and quickest way to resolve connectivity issues.” Source: Connecting to a Call of Duty: Black Ops III Game, Activision Support, published November 21, 2019.
- Pause bandwidth-heavy activity. Stop large downloads, video streaming, and other heavy uses on the network while you test.
- Use a wired connection where possible. Connecting the console or PC to the router with an Ethernet cable is the most consistent option Activision recommends. It can improve reliability, but it is not guaranteed to fix a lobby problem.
Test the game after each change so you know which step, if any, made a difference.

Step 4: Change router settings one at a time
If the service is up and the basic checks don’t help, Activision’s article lists router adjustments in a specific order. Make one change, test the game, and only move on if the problem persists. Router menus vary by manufacturer and ISP, so follow your router manual or ISP guidance where names differ.
- Enable UPnP. Turn on Universal Plug and Play in the router’s settings and test the game. This is the first thing Activision lists.
- Set up port forwarding with a static IP. If UPnP doesn’t help, turn UPnP off, assign your console or PC a static IP address, and forward the ports the article specifies for your platform. Test again.
- Run a DMZ test (PS4 and Xbox One only). Activision lists a DMZ test for these two consoles. Assign the console’s static IP as the DMZ host, test the game, and then remove it from the DMZ afterward. Leaving a device in the DMZ exposes it to the internet without the router’s usual protection, so don’t keep it there unless you have a specific reason.
Don’t assume any one of these will work for your setup. Each one is a test, not a guaranteed fix, and the right option depends on your platform and router.

Diagnosing which problem you have
Before changing settings, work out which pattern fits your situation. These distinctions are practical starting points, not a proven rule specific to Black Ops III.
- One player can’t connect to anything vs. only these two friends can’t connect. If one player can’t reach any online service, check that player’s account and network first. If only the two of you can’t join each other, a peer-connection or session-specific problem is more likely.
- Only one direction fails vs. both directions fail. Test whether each player can host and join. If only one direction fails, compare that player’s network setup with the other’s, changing one condition at a time.
- Console vs. PC. Use the network test and support instructions for your own platform. Console menu steps don’t apply to PC.
- Service alert vs. home-network trouble. Confirm service status before making any router changes.
- Wi-Fi vs. wired. If one of you is on Wi-Fi, test with an Ethernet cable before drawing any conclusion.
NAT and why it can matter
NAT, or network address translation, is how your router lets many devices share one public IP address. General networking guidance notes that a restrictive NAT type can block some peer-to-peer connections. That explanation is not specific to Black Ops III, and no source in this topic establishes that NAT is the cause of your problem. Check the NAT type your console or PC reports, if it shows one, and treat a restrictive type as a reason to try the router changes above, not as a diagnosis.

When to contact your ISP or network administrator
If the service is up, the platform network test passes, and the router steps don’t resolve the problem, contact your internet service provider. Activision advises this step when its listed network troubleshooting doesn’t solve connectivity.
On a shared network, such as a school or workplace, the firewall or network policy may block game traffic. Take the same details to the network administrator instead of changing the router yourself.
