If a Sim in The Sims 4 is frozen, ignoring their queue, or refusing to move, the first fix EA documents is a reset of that Sim, using the resetSim command or the Reset Object (Debug) option. A reset gets the Sim moving again, but it does not tell you why the Sim stopped. If the behavior returns, the cause could be the household, the lot, the save file, or the game itself, and each needs a different check. The symptom alone does not reveal which one you are dealing with.
Reset the stuck Sim first
EA’s help article on stuck and unresponsive Sims describes two methods. Both require the cheat window or the testingcheats command, so follow these steps in order:
- Open the cheat window. On PC or Mac, press Ctrl+Shift+C. On PlayStation, press L1+L2+R1+R2. On Xbox, press LB+LT+RB+RT.
- Enter the reset command. Type
resetSim Firstname Lastname, replacing the placeholders with the Sim’s full name exactly as it appears in the game. - Or use the object menu. Enter
testingcheats true, then shift-click the Sim and selectReset Object (Debug).
Button combinations and menu labels can change with game updates, so if a step does not match what you see, check EA’s live reset article before trying further workarounds.
What a reset does and does not do
- The Sim becomes playable again.
- The Sim stays in the same location, so a reset does not send them home.
- Current needs are not restored.
- Wishes and moodlets are canceled.
- Any action you wanted the Sim to take must be reissued after the reset.
Resetting several Sims at once
The command resetSim * attempts to reset every Sim in the current game. EA warns that it may not reset all of them and can return a “Sim not found” error. If that happens, reset the affected Sims one at a time with the individual command.

When the symptom comes back
If a reset works but the problem returns, or the reset does nothing, the next step is to find out whether the problem follows the Sim, the household, the lot, or the save. The Sims Helpers guide hosted on EA Forums, a Version 8.0 community knowledge-base article rather than an official EA diagnosis, suggests the following checks. Treat each one as a test to narrow the cause, not as a guaranteed fix.
| Pattern you see | Check to run | What the check cannot tell you |
|---|---|---|
| One Sim is affected, others move normally | Reset that Sim with resetSim, then see whether the Sim responds to a new action |
Whether the Sim’s data or the lot is at fault |
| Several Sims are affected | Try resetSim *, then reset any remaining Sims individually |
Which Sims the wildcard missed, if it returns a “Sim not found” error |
| The same household or lot keeps showing the problem | Travel, then move the Sim out and back in, including into a different home as a test | Whether the save data itself is damaged |
| The problem persists in every save you load | Restart the game, then test a backup save if you have one | What caused the problem in the first place |
Diagnostic sequence
- Travel and move the Sim. Travel with the affected Sim, then move them out of the home and back in. Moving them into a different home is a useful test, because it shows whether the lot is involved.
- Restart the game. A restart clears temporary state that a reset does not touch.
- Load a backup save. If a backup is available, test whether the problem appears in it. A clean backup suggests the current save has a problem.
- Test a separate new game. Close the game before starting the test, as the guide specifies. If a new game behaves normally, the problem is tied to your existing save or its contents.
- Consider a clean user folder. If the steps above fail, the guide points to a clean user-folder approach. This is the most involved step, so read the full instructions on the original EA Forums page before changing any files.
Console-specific caution
EA’s cheats FAQ states that, on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, cheats that require testingcheats true disable achievements or trophies on the current save. Other saves are unaffected. That caveat names those two consoles only, so do not assume it applies to later console versions without checking current platform guidance. If you want to keep achievements on a save you care about, reset the Sim from a backup or a separate save instead.

- Develop Parenting Skills – Level up your Sim’s parenting skills to satisfy their child’s needs and influence their behaviors. Gain new abilities through experience and choosing when to discipline bad actions, encourage good behavior, or just let kids be kids.
- Shape Your Sim’s Childhood – The decisions you make influence how your Sim parents and leave a lasting impact on their child’s future. Each choice shapes their personality, affects their traits, influences their family relationships, and guides their path into adulthood.
- Gather your Sim’s family to participate in new activities and spend quality time with each other. Sims of all ages can work together to complete a variety of school projects, express their creativity using construction blocks, or volunteer their time for good.
- Customize your Sims’ looks and their home with new family fashion and build items. Give the kids’ bedrooms extra personality, remodel the kitchen to feel homier, and let your Sims express their sporty or artistic sides with new outfits.
When to contact EA
If none of the steps above resolves the problem, use EA’s Sims 4 support hub. It links to help on resets, mods and game updates, error codes, backing up and resetting the game, and provides routes for reporting bugs and contacting support. Before you write in, note which command you used, which saves you tested, and whether the problem appeared in a new game, so the support team has the details they need.
For the reset method itself, see EA’s guide to resetting stuck and unresponsive Sims. The cheat list and the console caveat are in EA’s Sims 4 cheats FAQ.
