The reason depends on which Mortal Kombat you’re playing. In Mortal Kombat X and Mortal Kombat 11, a red Story option—especially one showing a countdown—usually means the game is still installing. In Mortal Kombat 1, the base game includes Story mode, but the later Khaos Reigns story is a separate expansion. Check the game title and the exact message on screen first; the fixes are different.
Start with the game title and on-screen message
Before changing settings or reinstalling, identify the release and what the menu says. A red mode with an estimated time points toward an installation still in progress in MKX or MK11. A missing-content message is a different problem: it may involve an add-on or entitlement rather than installation. For MK1, also check whether you mean the base game’s Story or the Khaos Reigns expansion.

- Game: MKX, MK11, or MK1?
- Status: Is Story red, showing a timer, marked unavailable, or asking for missing content?
- Installation: Does the console or launcher show that the game is fully installed and updated?
- Content: Are you trying to open the base Story or an expansion chapter?
If you’re playing Mortal Kombat X
WB Games Support says red Story and Online options in MKX mean the game is still installing. Other features may be playable while those parts finish. On PS4 and Xbox One, the support article says installation normally takes less than 30 minutes but can take up to 90 minutes, depending on the system. These are the article’s estimates, not a guarantee for every installation.
- Check installation progress. On Xbox One, look for the green progress bar on the game tile in the dashboard. Check the console’s installation status on PS4.
- Wait for installation to finish. Then reopen the game and check Story again.
- If the console shows the install is complete, fully power it off and restart it.
- If Story and Multiplayer are still inaccessible, reinstall the game. WB Games lists uninstalling and reinstalling as the next step for this specific MKX issue. Follow the console’s game-management menus, then allow the installation to complete before launching.
Those steps address the red-mode installation situation described by WB Games; they are not a guaranteed fix for every locked or missing-content message. WB Games Support: Mortal Kombat X Game Options are Red When I Start the Game.

Red modes with an estimated-time message
A red mode displaying “Estimated Time Until Available” indicates that parts of MK11 are still installing, according to WB Games Support. Additional characters, stages, and modes become available as installation progresses. While waiting, the game may allow local 1v1, tutorials, Fatality Training, and Practice.
- Let installation continue and check its progress through your platform.
- After it finishes, close the game completely and launch it again.
- If the game prompts you to install an update, complete that update.
- If online features are also failing, check whether other online features work.
The WB Games guide discusses internet and update availability in connection with online modes; it does not say an internet connection is required for Story mode. WB Games Support: Mortal Kombat 11: Game Modes are Red when I Start the Game.

Missing Story content rather than a countdown
If the message says an add-on or Story content is missing, the red-mode installation guide does not establish the cause. Check your platform’s game-management or add-on screen to see whether the content is installed, and confirm that the edition or account you’re using includes it. If the content is absent from the add-on list or the entitlement is unclear, contact WB Games or your platform’s support rather than assuming that reinstalling will fix it. This is a cautious check for a content-access issue, not a fix specified in the red-mode guide.
If you’re playing Mortal Kombat 1
MK1’s base game includes a Story mode. WB Games’ FAQ says an internet connection is not required for the game overall, though Invasions and online multiplayer do require one. So lack of internet alone is not established as a reason you cannot play the base Story.

When to contact support
Escalate the issue if the installation is complete, the game has been restarted and updated where applicable, and Story still does not open—or if content you believe you own is missing from the platform’s add-on list. Include the exact game, platform, message shown, installation status, and the specific Story content you’re trying to access. Those details distinguish a stalled install from an update or entitlement problem.
