Halo Infinite did not remove split-screen multiplayer. What 343 Industries canceled was local campaign split-screen co-op, which the studio said on September 1, 2022 it would no longer work on. Its stated reason was that it had reallocated studio resources toward ongoing live-service development, player feedback, and quality-of-life updates. The campaign co-op feature had already missed the game’s launch, and the co-op option documented later was network-based, not local.
What was canceled, and what was not
The word “split-screen” covers more than one feature in Halo Infinite’s development history, and the cancellation applies to only one of them. Keeping the modes separate makes the story easier to follow.
| Mode | Status in the documented record | How to describe it |
|---|---|---|
| Split-screen multiplayer on Xbox consoles | Stated in the August 2021 development update as planned for availability at launch. | Local multiplayer, separate from campaign co-op. |
| Local campaign split-screen co-op | Delayed from launch, then canceled by 343 Industries in September 2022. | Couch co-op through the single-player campaign. This is the feature that was removed. |
| Campaign Network Co-Op | Documented in the Winter Update in November 2022 as a network campaign mode for up to four players. | An online mode. It does not replace local split-screen. |
Timeline of the decision
- August 2021: In a development update, campaign co-op was announced as missing launch. Joseph Staten, then the Halo Infinite campaign lead, said the team had made a difficult decision to delay it so it could focus on a quality launch.
- September 1, 2022: 343 Industries said it had reallocated studio resources and was no longer working on local campaign split-screen co-op. GameSpot reported the statement.
- November 8, 2022: The Winter Update, documented on Halo Support, described Network Co-Op as a campaign mode for up to four players.
The studio’s stated reason
The explanation 343 Industries gave in September 2022 was a resource-priority decision, not a feature-by-feature technical one. The statement read:
“In order to improve and accelerate ongoing live service development, and to better address player feedback and quality of life updates, we have reallocated studio resources and are no longer working on local campaign split-screen co-op.”

The studio did not publish a more detailed internal breakdown of that trade-off. Readers should treat the statement as the official reason and not as a full account of the project’s internal planning.
Why campaign co-op was difficult to ship
The earlier delay gives useful context for the later cancellation. In the August 2021 update, Staten explained what made campaign co-op hard to build for Halo Infinite:
Rank #2
“And on the Co-op side, we have the opportunity to play Campaign all the time. It’s this wonderful, wide-open, non-linear take on a Halo Campaign, and it’s going to offer so much more flexibility to take down Banished bases from all kinds of different angles, to progress through the game in your own way, to a certain extent. At the same time, though, that’s complicated when we think about save systems and all the technology that needs to drive this more nonlinear experience.”
He also tied the delay to launch priorities:
“Unfortunately, as we focus the team for shut-down and really focused on a quality experience for launch, we made the really tough decision to delay shipping Campaign Co-op for launch.”

Taken together, the two statements describe a campaign designed to be played in a nonlinear way, which added save-system and engineering complexity to any co-op mode. They do not say which part of that complexity proved decisive for local split-screen specifically.
What the public explanation does not say
The studio’s statements do not attribute the decision to a specific technical bug, a budget or headcount figure, player usage numbers, or monetization. Those explanations circulate informally in discussions of the cancellation, but the official record for this decision does not support them.

Is local campaign split-screen coming back?
The most recent documented statement on this topic is the November 2022 Winter Update, which described network co-op. The record available for this article does not establish whether local campaign split-screen was ever reconsidered or revived after that date. Anyone checking the current status should look at 343 Industries’ and Halo Support’s official announcements, because later updates may have changed the picture.

If you want to play the Halo Infinite campaign with a friend on the same screen, the documented option is not local split-screen. The campaign co-op that was documented is Network Co-Op, an online mode that supports up to four players.
