Sims 4 mods usually disappear for one of four reasons: a game update switched them off, the Custom Content and Mods setting is turned off, the mod files are not in the Mods folder the game reads, or the mod is out of date for the current game patch. Electronic Arts’ official help guidance covers all four, and most cases can be fixed in a few minutes without reinstalling the game.
Identify which of the four causes applies
The symptoms look similar, so it helps to match what you see against the most likely cause before changing anything.

Cause 1: An update disabled your mods on purpose
This is the most common explanation for mods that worked yesterday and vanished after a patch. EA states in its official Sims 4 help article on mods and game updates that it disables mods during updates. In EA’s words, “By disabling Mods when we update, we try to limit any issues or problems with your gameplay.” A mod that worked before an update can cause problems afterward, and the creator may need time to publish a compatible version. Some mods will need to be fully reinstalled once updated files are available.
The reason is practical rather than a bug. Gameplay-changing mods are the ones most likely to conflict with new game code, so EA turns the whole category off rather than letting a broken mod affect saves.

Cause 2: The Custom Content and Mods setting is off
If the setting is off, the game will not load any mods, regardless of whether the files are in the right place. Check it before you do anything else.

- Launch The Sims 4 and open the Game Options menu from the main menu.
- Select the Other tab.
- Confirm that Enable Custom Content and Mods is switched on.
- Exit the game completely and relaunch it. The change does not apply to a session that is already running.
If the setting is already on, move to the file check below rather than toggling it repeatedly.
Cause 3: The mod files are not in the Mods folder
EA’s installation guidance, published in its English-language help article on installing mods, describes the process for new downloads. Mods are usually distributed as .zip or .rar archives, and the game does not read the archive itself.

- Download the mod on a PC or Mac. Mods cannot be downloaded on PlayStation or Xbox.
- Unzip the .zip file or extract the .rar file.
- Move the extracted mod files into the Mods folder inside Electronic Arts > The Sims 4. If that folder does not exist, EA says you can create it.
- Enable the setting in Game Options > Other, then relaunch the game.
A common mistake is leaving the archive file, or a folder containing it, in place of the extracted contents. If a mod appears to vanish after you moved it, check that the extracted files are directly in the Mods folder and were not left inside a second nested folder by the extraction tool.

Cause 4: The mod needs an update for the current patch
A mod can be correctly installed and enabled and still fail after a patch. The game’s version number is shown at the lower left of the Main Menu, so note it before you look for a fix. Then visit the creator’s site and look for an updated file labelled for that version. Follow the creator’s replacement instructions, because some updates require removing the old files first.
EA does not vet mods. In the words of its installation guidance, “Maxis and EA don’t pre-screen, endorse, or support specific Mods or Custom Content.” That means compatibility is the creator’s responsibility, and EA’s only role is the official setting and the update-time disabling described above.

Protect your saves while mods are disabled
When mods are disabled after an update, you can still play, but you should not save over your progress in that state. EA advises testing the game without mods and then exiting without saving before you re-enable custom content and mods. It warns that saving and exiting before re-enabling custom content and mods can remove that content from a saved game. Keep a copy of your save files before testing so you have a fallback if content is removed.
Isolate a problematic mod
If the files are present, the setting is on, and the game still has problems, EA recommends removing game mods before custom content, because gameplay-changing mods are more likely to cause issues. To find a specific culprit when you have many mods installed:
- Move half of the mods out of the Mods folder into a temporary folder on your desktop.
- Launch the game and test the problem.
- If the problem is gone, the culprit is in the group you removed. Restore half of that group and test again.
- If the problem remains, the culprit is still in the group you kept. Remove half of that group and test again.
- Keep halving until you isolate a single mod, then check that mod’s creator for an update.
EA describes this as a “50/50 method.” It is a troubleshooting procedure, not a statistic about how often mods conflict.
What the official guidance does not establish
EA’s general help pages explain the common causes, but they cannot identify the cause on your particular computer. The official sources do not document specific problems involving alternate Documents-folder locations, cloud sync, file permissions, or antivirus software, so do not assume any of these caused your mods to vanish without evidence from your own system. EA also describes mods as third-party content that it does not endorse or support, so download from creators you trust.

- Check whether a recent update disabled mods, and look for an updated mod version.
- Confirm Enable Custom Content and Mods is on in Game Options > Other, then restart.
- Confirm the extracted mod files sit in Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Mods.
