A secondary report attributes to Naoki Yoshida (Yoshi-P) the statement that the original Sphene came from the Ninth Reflection and died in the Calamity of Lightning. The available report does not identify the original interview or provide a verifiable transcript, so this is an attributed account—not a confirmed direct quotation. It also distinguishes that original Sphene from the reproduction encountered in Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail.
What the reported Yoshida statement says
A player-posted discussion reproduces an account of an interview in which Yoshida reportedly explained that the Sphene known in Dawntrail is a reproduction of an original Sphene from the Ninth Reflection. In the reproduced account, the original died during the Calamity of Lightning. The discussion containing the attributed statement does not name the interviewer or link to the original interview, so the wording should not be treated as an independently verified verbatim quote.
The distinction matters: the account concerns Sphene’s origin and the fate of her original, while the Sphene encountered in the expansion is described as a reproduction. It is not, by itself, a complete explanation of Alexandria’s history or a substitute for the game’s story.
What Dawntrail’s official material establishes
The Ninth is part of the current story
Square Enix’s official Dawntrail patch 7.5 page describes the Warrior of Light and companions as having “Returned from the levin-wracked lands of the Ninth.” That confirms the Ninth is part of the expansion’s official story framing. It does not verify what Yoshida said in the reported interview.

Alexandria is named in the quest database
The official Lodestone quest database lists “A Knight of Alexandria” as a level 99 Dawntrail quest. This establishes Alexandria as a named element of the expansion, but the quest listing does not independently confirm the interview account about Sphene’s origin.
Does “the Ninth” mean Final Fantasy IX?
Fans have discussed whether the Ninth Reflection connects directly to Final Fantasy IX. A Square Enix-hosted player discussion records community interpretations, not canon confirmation. Separately, Automaton West’s coverage reports Yoshida’s uncertainty about how extensively to reference Final Fantasy IX in Dawntrail. That is useful context for the game’s references, but it does not establish a one-to-one equivalence between locations in Final Fantasy IX and the Reflection.

So, did Yoshi-P spoil the mystery?
The report points to a specific answer about the original Sphene: she was from the Ninth Reflection and died during the Calamity of Lightning. But because the original interview has not been identified in the available source, the claim remains a secondary attribution. Official Dawntrail material independently places the Ninth in the story and names Alexandria in a quest; it does not authenticate the reported interview or settle every question about how the Reflection relates to Final Fantasy IX.
