The announcement described two benefits: membership in r/xboxinsiders and a trophy on the Reddit profile. The setup steps below come from that 2019 post. They show how the feature was meant to work at launch, not how to link accounts today, because current availability could not be confirmed in official sources.
What Reddit announced in 2019
Reddit published “Xbox and Reddit Link Up” on December 17, 2019. The post said that Xbox Live and Reddit accounts could be connected so players could interact with each other across the two platforms. Reddit framed the partnership as a way to connect people where they already play.
The post named two concrete benefits for users who completed the link:
- Membership in r/xboxinsiders, a community that Reddit described as managed by Xbox and focused on Xbox topics.
- A trophy on the user’s Reddit profile marking the connection.
Reddit’s own wording at launch was: “Available today, you can now link your Xbox Live accounts with your Reddit account to better connect on the games you love to play.” That sentence is the only availability statement in the announcement, and it is dated to 2019.

Original setup steps (2019 process)
The announcement described the following route, which runs through the Xbox Game Bar on Windows rather than through a website or console menu:
- Press Windows logo key + G to open the Xbox Game Bar.
- Open Settings, then go to Accounts.
- Sign in to Xbox Live if prompted. The announcement noted that most linked accounts require an Xbox Live sign-in.
- Choose the social network to link (Reddit).
- Select Link and follow the on-screen prompts.
No console, controller, or additional hardware appears in these steps. The process relies only on the Game Bar software and your existing sign-in credentials.

Current status: what can and cannot be confirmed
The Xbox Game Bar steps and the r/xboxinsiders benefit are documented only in Reddit’s December 2019 announcement. A search of current official Xbox and Reddit material did not establish whether the Reddit linking option or its benefits still exist. Reddit’s general login help, last updated June 16, 2026, explains how to sign in and out of a Reddit account but does not mention Xbox account linking, so it cannot confirm the feature either way.
If you see the option in your own Xbox Game Bar settings, the 2019 steps should still apply in principle. If you do not see it, the feature has most likely been removed or changed, and the 2019 steps no longer apply.

What linking does not do
The announcement describes only community membership and a profile trophy. It does not say that linking merges the two accounts, that Reddit posts appear on Xbox, or that either service gains access to the other’s data or permissions beyond those two benefits. Do not assume any of those outcomes from the 2019 post.
Statistics cited in the announcement
Reddit stated in 2019 that it had “more than 1000 active game communities.” This is a company-published figure from the time of the announcement. It is not a current count, and no independent verification of it was located.

Checklist before you try the 2019 steps
- Confirm you are on Windows and can open the Xbox Game Bar with Windows logo key + G.
- Have your Xbox Live sign-in ready, since the announcement says most links require it.
- Have your Reddit login ready and be prepared to see an error or no option if the feature has been retired.
