You don’t need to know anything about Pokémon games to play with this Pikachu. The product is a touch-responsive plush, not a game controller, and it asks nothing of you in a Trainer role. “Controlling” it means touching, hugging, and positioning it so that its built-in reactions trigger. The Japanese product listing from Pokémon Center advertises more than 40 of these reactions.
Which product this is
The Pikachu described here is Takara Tomy’s Pokémon life PIKACHU, item number 937562. Pokémon Center Japan sells it under the Japanese name おうちにポケモン PIKACHU, with product code 4904810937562. The Takara Tomy Asia product page confirms the product identity, item number, and the broad interaction types, and the Pokémon Center Online listing contains the detailed interaction instructions.

Because there is also an interactive Pikachu from a different maker, check the item number before you buy. Jazwares sells a separate figure, the Pokémon Train & Play Deluxe Pikachu (model PKW3330), which has a head touch sensor and a chest microphone and responds to speech and music. Its conversion of the manual is available on Manuals+, and the two toys should not be confused.

What “control” means with this plush
Control here is limited. You cannot steer Pikachu, give it commands, or direct it through a game. You provide physical input, and the plush answers with a preset reaction. The listing describes the toy as reacting to physical contact in different ways depending on where and how you touch it, and that is the full scope of the interaction.

How to make it react
Petting the head, cheeks, or belly
Each of these three areas produces its own reaction. According to the listing, petting them separately is what gives the plush its variety, so try each area in turn rather than stroking one spot.
Hugging
Hugging triggers a special response that is distinct from petting. The listing presents it as the toy’s most affectionate reaction.
Laying it on its side
Placing Pikachu on its side makes it fall asleep. While it is asleep, petting it can prompt sleep-talking or humming, so a light touch while it sleeps is a second way to get a sound response.
The 40-plus reaction claim
The “more than 40 reactions” figure comes from Pokémon Center’s product copy. It is a manufacturer and retailer feature claim, not a number measured by an independent tester, and the listing does not break down which reactions correspond to which touches.

When it responds weakly
The listing gives a short troubleshooting sequence for weak or missed responses:
- Keep your hand in contact with the area a little longer.
- Tap the same area repeatedly.
- Extend the hug instead of making a brief squeeze.
- If the plush gives no response for roughly 10 minutes, it enters sleep mode. Restart its power, as the listing describes, to play again.
The sleep-mode step matters because a silent Pikachu is often idle rather than broken. Try the first three steps before assuming a fault.
