Knowing which details are established comic-book history—and which are part of the game’s own setting—makes its cast, maps and seasonal themes easier to place.
Who Is Galacta?
Galacta is described in Marvel comics as the daughter of Galactus. James Whitbrook’s December 9, 2024, Gizmodo/io9 explainer says she was created in 2009 for a short-lived comic series and has had limited appearances. In that account, she hides on Earth as Gali and consumes hostile biomass to manage her hunger while protecting the planet.
In Marvel Rivals, Galacta serves as the match commentator and helps bring the heroes together. The role draws on a comics character, though the game is giving her a prominent place in its own story.
Is Marvel Rivals’ Story Based on the Comics?
Not as a direct, one-to-one adaptation of a particular comics storyline. The game’s premise centers on the Timestream Entanglement, triggered by an encounter between two versions of Doctor Doom. It pulls heroes and villains into a futuristic amalgam reality.

Whitbrook compares the fused reality to Battleworld in Marvel’s 2015 Secret Wars. That comparison helps explain the idea of disparate worlds colliding; it does not mean Marvel Rivals is retelling Secret Wars. The game’s central setting is described as original, built from familiar Marvel ingredients rather than mapped onto one event.
Is Jeff the Shark Really From the Comics?
Yes. Jeff the Land Shark debuted in West Coast Avengers in 2018, in a story by Kelly Thompson and Daniele di Nicuolo. Gwenpool adopts one of the Land Sharks and names him Jeff. The character later became the star of It’s Jeff!, a digital Infinity comic written by Thompson and illustrated by Gurihiru that began in 2021, according to Whitbrook.
Those series are the most direct comics starting points if you want to read more about the game’s small, toothy hero.
Why Aren’t Iron Fist and Psylocke Danny Rand or Kwannon?
Marvel Rivals uses different characters under those familiar superhero identities: Lin Lie is Iron Fist, and Sai is Psylocke. These are distinct choices of identity, not a claim that Danny Rand or Kwannon lack their own histories.

Iron Fist: Lin Lie
Lin Lie was first introduced as Sword Master in the Chinese-market comic Warriors of Three Sovereigns in 2018. He reached Western audiences through Agents of Atlas during War of the Realms in 2019, then took on the Iron Fist mantle in 2022, as Whitbrook recounts. The game’s Iron Fist is therefore a newer bearer of the name, not Danny Rand.
Psylocke: Sai
Sai was created by artist and writer Peach Momoko for Demon Days (2021), a series that reimagines Marvel characters through Japanese folklore. Rivals’ Psylocke draws on this psychic ronin rather than using Kwannon as the character’s identity.
Is Luna Snow From the Comics?
Luna Snow originated in another game, not in Marvel Rivals or the comics. Netmarble created her for Marvel Future Fight in 2018. She later made her comics debut in Agents of Atlas in 2019 and, according to Whitbrook, also appeared in a solo one-shot. Her path is an example of a character moving from a game into Marvel’s comics.
Why Do All the Mutant Characters Talk About Krakoa?
The game’s mutant references point to the Krakoan nation from the X-Men comics. In the account summarized by Whitbrook, the Timestream Entanglement draws a version of Krakoa—and mutants including Magneto, Storm, Wolverine and Magik—into the game’s 2099 setting.

Krakoa’s comics-era importance comes from the House of X/Powers of X stories that began in 2019. Mutants established a nation on the living island, and its resurrection system relied on the combined powers of five mutants and backups stored by Cerebro. Whitbrook describes an Orchis assault in 2023 as ending that nation and setting up a line-wide reboot. This is a snapshot of the continuity discussed in that 2024 article, not a complete account of X-Men stories or their status today.

Some map objectives and scenery point to specific corners of Marvel comics. Whitbrook identifies these references:
- Yggsgard: Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder, Thor’s goats.
- Klyntar: Knull, the creator of the symbiotes.
- Tokyo 2099: Spider-Zero and the Master Weaver, associated with the Web of Life and Destiny. Whitbrook traces Spider-Zero’s comic creation to the third volume of Spider-Verse in 2019.
These details help identify what the game is referencing; they do not mean every escort objective is a scene recreated from a comic.
What Is the Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda?
The Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda has a comics history that predates Marvel Rivals. Whitbrook traces the concept to 2017 and Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Black Panther run. In that storyline, T’Challa sends Wakandan scientists into space; a temporal anomaly strands them thousands of years in the past, and they establish an empire that expands across galaxies. The game’s debut-season battle-pass theme draws on that established comics idea.
