Nintendo has announced a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2, with a release date of November 5, 2026. It is a remake of the 1998 Nintendo 64 game, not a new Zelda adventure, and it is listed for Switch 2 only.
The release basics
- Title: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (remake)
- Platform: Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo lists it as exclusive to Switch 2, so it is not announced for original Switch.
- Release date: November 5, 2026, according to Nintendo’s announcement and U.S. product listing. Retail availability and preorder stock can change, so check the date before buying.
- Editions: A digital listing and a physical Switch 2 edition are both shown on Nintendo’s U.S. store.
The announcement itself was made in a Nintendo of America trailer description published June 9, 2026, which reads: “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time will be reborn on Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026.” Nintendo says series producer Eiji Aonuma showed the first gameplay and revealed the release date, but the official material reviewed does not include a direct quote from him, so no statement is attributed to him here.

What Nintendo says has changed
Nintendo describes the remake as a substantial rebuild rather than a simple resolution bump. Every item below comes from Nintendo’s own description. None of it has been verified through independent hands-on testing, and no performance comparison against the original is available.
Visuals and audio
- Nintendo says the visuals have been completely overhauled.
- Cutscenes are fully voiced, and Nintendo describes expanded dialogue.
- The music is described as a symphonic orchestral arrangement.
- Nintendo says the day and night cycle in towns continues in the remake.
Controls and camera
- Nintendo lists new jump and dash controls.
- Camera control is moved to the right stick.
- Movement controls have been updated. Nintendo’s announcement does not spell out a full control map, so check the official manual or in-game settings when the game launches.
Loading and performance
Nintendo says the remake loads faster and runs more smoothly. Those are the company’s claims. Frame rates, loading times and handheld or docked behavior have not been measured in any source covered here.

Threads of Time and ZELDA NOTES
The remake includes two orientation and companion features:
- Threads of Time tracks progress and objectives in-game while filling in a tapestry.
- ZELDA NOTES is a companion feature in the Nintendo Switch app for compatible smart devices. Nintendo describes it as including an activity record, image-based location hints, a virtual ocarina and a daily quiz.
Nintendo says the quiz contains over 2,000 questions. That is the announced size of the quiz, not a fixed total, and Nintendo’s figure is the only one available.

Physical or digital
The choice readers actually face is between the physical and digital editions. Both are listed on Nintendo’s U.S. store. Nintendo’s announcement does not establish any gameplay, content or performance difference between them.

What is not yet established
- Independent reviews or hands-on impressions of the remake.
- Whether the remake adds new dungeons, story content or open-world elements. Nintendo’s material does not claim any of these.
- Whether the remake is better than the original in play. Nintendo describes improvements, but that is a publisher claim.
- Exact pricing for the game and its editions in the official announcement.
- Current retail stock, preorder availability and regional pricing for the physical edition.
Why the remake is news
The title’s phrase “finally gets the Next-Gen remake it deserves” is editorial opinion. The factual version is simpler: Nintendo has committed to a full rebuild of a 1998 game, with a set release date and specific technical and presentation changes. Whether that fulfills what fans wanted is a judgment that will depend on how the game plays once it ships.
The most useful next steps are to check Nintendo’s U.S. store listings for the physical and digital editions before November 5, 2026, and to confirm the ocarina and collector products with retailers near their announced windows.
