ZeniMax Media announced on June 24, 2009, that it was acquiring id Software, the studio behind Doom, Wolfenstein and Quake. The deal had closed the previous day, according to the Los Angeles Times. Contemporary reports said the purchase price was undisclosed; a 2017 complaint by id co-founder John Carmack later alleged total consideration of $150 million.
Why did ZeniMax buy id Software?
The companies presented the acquisition as a strategic fit: id brought a strong first-person shooter portfolio and technical expertise, while ZeniMax-owned Bethesda Softworks was known for role-playing games such as Fallout and The Elder Scrolls. The stated goal was to bring those complementary strengths together and give id a publishing home within the ZeniMax-Bethesda organization.

That explanation reflects what the executives said around the announcement, not an independently established account of every factor behind the deal. In an interview reported by GamesBeat, Carmack said id was tired of competing with its publishers over how its games were featured. The GamesBeat report quoted him: “We’re really getting kind of tired competing with our own publishers in terms of how our titles will be featured.”
ZeniMax chief executive Robert Altman cited rising development and advertising costs and industry consolidation, and said the companies’ strengths complemented one another. He also recalled that ZeniMax had initially been skeptical a deal could happen given id’s success and history of independence, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Publishing and control
For id, joining ZeniMax offered a route to publish future games through the Bethesda structure. Carmack told the Los Angeles Times that at a larger publisher, id would be “just one of many studios at an Activision or an [Electronic Arts].” The article reported that existing publishing agreements for Wolfenstein with Activision and Rage with Electronic Arts remained in place, while Carmack said ZeniMax would publish future titles, including Doom 4.
Id chief executive Todd Hollenshead described the appeal as aligning the studio and publisher’s interests in development and marketing. His statement was an expectation at the time of the announcement, not proof of later outcomes. PCWorld’s contemporary report quoted Hollenshead calling Bethesda a “smart, sophisticated publisher” and saying the parties’ interests would be aligned.

How much did ZeniMax pay for id Software?
The price was not disclosed in contemporary coverage of the June 2009 announcement. A later figure comes from a different kind of source: in a complaint filed on March 7, 2017, John Carmack alleged that the total agreed consideration for id Software’s assets was $150 million. That is an allegation in a party filing, not a contemporaneous public announcement or a court finding.
The complaint described the alleged consideration as $45 million in cash at closing, $40 million through cash promissory notes and $65 million through convertible promissory notes. These details should be understood as the filing’s account of the transaction. The original reporting’s description of the price as undisclosed remains distinct from Carmack’s later allegation.

The announcement described id as continuing to operate as a studio under Carmack’s direction, with no planned changes to game development and long-term employment contracts for id principals. Those were announced intentions for continuity, not a guarantee that operations would never change. The Los Angeles Times account reported these plans alongside the transaction details.

Microsoft completed its acquisition of ZeniMax Media on March 9, 2021. Microsoft’s fiscal 2021 Form 10-K reports a total purchase price of $8.1 billion, consisting primarily of cash. That figure is the price Microsoft reported for ZeniMax as a whole; it is not a separately disclosed valuation of id Software. Microsoft’s SEC filing records the acquisition and purchase price.
