Bethesda’s published requirements call for 58 GB of additional storage and list a GTX 1080 8GB among the recommended specifications. The available performance evidence is a February 2017 GameGPU benchmark—not a current test—so use it as historical context rather than a guarantee for your PC.
Where to get the Fallout 4 High-Resolution Texture Pack
Steam lists the add-on as free and requires the Steam version of Fallout 4. Bethesda Support also directs players to the Steam store. Open the Fallout 4 High-Resolution Texture Pack on Steam. Published PC requirements and storage
Bethesda’s 2017 announcement and Steam’s listing give the same key hardware figures. These are the published specifications, not a fresh compatibility test or advice to buy older hardware.

What GameGPU’s 2017 test found
GameGPU published its benchmark on February 8, 2017. It tested maximum graphics quality at 1920×1080, 2560×1600, and 3840×2160. The article said performance was identical in its comparison of the game with and without the pack, making a frame-rate comparison pointless in that test; memory use changed. That result applies to GameGPU’s 2017 test setup, not every PC, driver, game build, mod combination, or current graphics card. GameGPU: Fallout 4 High Resolution Texture Pack Test

Video-memory use reported with the pack
GameGPU reported recommended video-memory use of 4,096 MB at 1920×1080, 4,096 MB at 2560×1440, and about 6,144 MB at 3840×2160. The article’s benchmark-resolution list labels the middle test 2560×1600, while its memory-use section labels it 2560×1440; those two labels should not be treated as an exact match.
System RAM measurements
In the same 2017 test, reported system RAM use was higher with the pack than without it. Values below are GameGPU’s measurements on its test stand, in GB:

Graphics-card tiers in the historical benchmark
GameGPU described these cards as delivering acceptable frame rates at maximum quality in its tests:
- At 1920×1080: Radeon RX 460- or GeForce GTX 770-class cards.
- At 2560×1440: Radeon R9 380X or GeForce GTX 780 Ti.
- At 3840×2160: Radeon R9 Fury X or GeForce GTX 1080.
It separately labeled the Radeon R9 280X or GeForce GTX 770 as optimal at 1080p, and the Radeon R9 290 or GeForce GTX 970 as optimal at 1440p. These are dated descriptions from that benchmark, not guidance for choosing a GPU today.

Is the texture pack worth installing?
The practical decision is whether the optional high-resolution textures are worth the large download on your system. The published listing asks for 58 GB of available storage, and the historical benchmark recorded increased memory use. The sources here do not establish how much better the pack looks on current hardware, how it performs on a modern PC, or which present-day GPU is suitable.
Quick Recap
- Check disk space: make sure you can free the listed 58 GB before downloading.
- Consider your existing hardware: compare it with Bethesda’s original published specifications, but do not treat the 2017 GPU list as modern buying advice.
- Try it as an optional add-on: Bethesda says it can be disabled from the launcher if you want to return to the original textures.
