To install an osu! skin, open or drag its .osk file into the game. For a .zip or .rar download in osu!stable, extract it and put the folder containing skin.ini in the game’s Skins folder. osu!(lazer) also imports .osk files, but skin support is partial and its files are managed inside the client.
Before you install: identify the file and client
The osu! wiki describes a skin as “a set of images and audio clips that replace the default ones used in osu!” The installation depends on whether you use osu!stable or osu!(lazer), and whether the download is an .osk file or a compressed archive. See the osu! wiki’s Skin article for the supported formats and skin sources.

Install a skin in osu!stable
If the download is an .osk file
- Download the
.oskfile from the skin creator. - Open the file with osu! or drag it into the osu! window.
- Select the imported skin in the game’s skin options.
If the download is a .zip or .rar archive
- Extract the archive.
- Find the resulting skin folder. It should contain
skin.ini. - Move that folder into the
Skinsfolder in your osu!stable installation. - If osu!stable is already running, press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + S to reload the skin list. Restarting osu! also reloads it.
- Choose the skin in the game’s skin options.
If the skin does not appear, check that you moved the folder containing skin.ini, rather than an outer folder that only contains another nested skin folder. The osu! wiki Skinning FAQ documents the reload shortcut and notes that osu! has over 200 skinnable elements, excluding individual animated frames.
Import a skin in osu!(lazer)
In lazer, open an .osk file with the client or drag it into the game to import it. A Technical Support Team response on the official osu! forum dated March 20, 2025, gives that method and suggests converting a skin through stable when the file is not in .osk format. Skin support in lazer is partial compared with stable, according to the official osu! lazer upgrade guide. The forum response clarifies that gameplay elements can change, but UI skinning is unsupported. That forum detail reflects the answer posted on March 20, 2025; client behavior may change over time.
Why you should not look for a lazer Skins folder
Lazer does not provide a user-facing equivalent of stable’s Skins folder. It keeps imported files in a managed, hash-based file store, so do not try to install or edit skins by copying files into a stable-style directory or changing managed files directly. The osu! file-storage documentation describes exporting an item, making external changes, then importing it again as the documented approach for edits.

Where to find skins and what to check
The osu! wiki points to the skinning forums and notes that creators may also share skins on user pages or in video descriptions. Check the creator’s stated file format and installation instructions before downloading: the official documentation does not establish that every external download is safe or up to date.
