.kkrieger is a complete first-person shooter in an executable of 97,280 bytes, roughly 95 KiB, according to Guinness World Records. It fits because the file does not contain most of the game’s visuals and sounds. It contains instructions that generate them when the program starts. The result is a real 3D shooter, but an unfinished beta, and its 2004 system targets do not establish that it runs on current Windows versions.
What .kkrieger is
.kkrieger is a first-person shooter built by the German demoscene group .theprodukkt and presented at Breakpoint 2004. It was released as a beta. The group’s release notes say the team ran out of time for the most important part of the project, and the game’s gameplay was never polished to the level the developers wanted. It is best understood as a technical showcase with a playable shooter inside it, not as a finished commercial release.
How 97,280 bytes can hold a 3D shooter
Most games ship finished assets: texture images, 3D meshes, audio files. .kkrieger ships very little of that. Instead, it stores compact procedures, which are small descriptions of how a texture or model should be built, and the program runs those procedures when it loads. The idea is to save the recipe rather than the cake.
The generator behind the content
The game’s textures and models were produced by .theprodukkt’s own tool, .werkkzeug3, at startup. Programmer Fabian Giesen later described the project as an experiment in procedural content generation. Public documentation for the code also describes assets being reconstructed during loading. The retrospective cited below additionally mentions generated MIDI music. Beyond those points, the sources do not establish exactly which other game elements were generated, so avoid assuming that every sound or object comes from a procedure.

What the executable does not contain
The size figure measures the program file, not the game’s full footprint. The code relies on Windows and DirectX functionality for drawing and system access rather than bundling its own complete rendering stack. That reliance is a design decision that keeps the file small, and it ties the game to the platform it was built for.
The cost of a tiny download
Generating content at runtime trades disk space for computation. A small file can still require substantial memory and time while it loads and runs. A 2023 Activision Blizzard retrospective puts the game’s runtime memory use at about 300 MB. That is an approximate figure from a retrospective, not a measured benchmark from a named test, and it describes the period the retrospective addresses rather than any modern machine.

Is it a complete game?
It is a playable 3D shooter with levels, enemies, and weapons, but it is not a finished product. The release was labeled a beta, and the group’s release notes state, without naming an individual author: “Still, in the end we didn´t have time for the most important thing: gameplay.” Readers should expect a technical achievement first and a polished game second.
Giesen’s view, from a 2005 Game Developer interview, frames the project the same way. He called it “the fact that it’s only a first experiment of what you can do with procedural content generation for game and multimedia development.” He also said the gameplay implementation came too late to receive enough polishing.

Can you run it today?
The sources in this article do not establish a currently maintained official download, a definitive release state beyond the 2004 beta, or confirmed operation on Windows 10 or Windows 11. The repository documentation describes a Windows target that requires DirectX 9 or greater. That is a historical requirement, not a guarantee for modern systems.
If you want to try it, look for a current official source first, and check the stated configuration against your machine before assuming it will launch. Treat any result you find as specific to that setup rather than a general verdict on the game.

Why it still matters
The project shows what procedural generation can do with very little data. Storing instructions for textures and models instead of the finished files is a method used in other small productions, but .kkrieger is the best-known case of the principle carried to a complete shooter. Compare it with other small productions on executable size, how much content is generated at runtime, hardware demands, and how complete the gameplay is. Avoid assuming equal hardware conditions across titles unless you have evidence for them.
The useful headline is not that the game is tiny. It is that a few kilobytes of generator logic can produce a textured 3D shooter, provided the machine has the memory and the platform support it was built around.
