A missing display does not by itself mean your friends or account data are lost. The right next step depends on whether the issue is on the console dashboard, in an Xbox app, or inside one game.
First, find out where the list is missing
Check whether the problem affects the Xbox console dashboard, the Xbox mobile app, the Windows Xbox app or Game Bar, or only a particular game. Xbox describes friend and request management across console, Windows, mobile, and xbox.com/play interfaces; comparing surfaces can help narrow the issue, but it does not prove where the underlying cause is.
- Only one interface: The issue may be limited to that app or display. Check another Xbox surface before changing account settings.
- Only one game: Use the game-specific steps below; an in-game social list is not necessarily the same display as your console friends list.
- Several Xbox surfaces: Check Xbox service status and account privacy settings before contacting support.
Check whether Friends & social has a service issue
Open Xbox Live Status and look for an incident affecting Friends & social. Status can change, so check the page at the time you are troubleshooting. The available status information does not establish whether the service is currently up or down.
If an incident is listed, wait for Xbox to resolve it and then check the list again. If the status page shows no relevant issue, continue with the settings and interface checks below.

Review Xbox privacy and friend settings
On an Xbox console, open Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety > Xbox privacy > View details & customize > Friends, followers & clubs. Review the options for who can send friend requests or follow the account, along with the visibility controls relevant to what you want other people to see. Xbox documents this path for managing friend and follower settings.
For a game-specific visibility problem, Bethesda Support advises checking that See you’re online and See your game and app history are set to Friends. The setting names or available choices may depend on the account and interface.

If one game has a stale or missing friends list
Sign out of the game and back in
If you recently added someone and that person does not appear in a particular game, fully leave the game, then sign back in. Bethesda recommends this step for its game-support case; it is not a guaranteed fix for every Xbox friends-list problem.
Allow for game-specific social data
An in-game list can be stale even when the console list is current. Microsoft’s developer documentation explains that game social data may become stale depending on how the game calls social services, and that a game may show last-known presence during a temporary service interruption. This describes possible game behavior, not a diagnosis of your account or a claim that Xbox is having an outage.

When to contact Xbox Support
If Xbox Live Status shows no relevant incident, your privacy settings look right, and the problem persists across multiple Xbox surfaces, contact Xbox Support. Include the device and app where the list fails, whether it also fails elsewhere, the affected account context, what the list shows, and any error text. Those details help distinguish an interface-specific symptom from a broader account or service issue.
The available guidance does not establish one universal consumer fix for every blank or outdated friends list. A factory reset, hardware replacement, or networking purchase is not justified by this symptom alone.
