If Old School RuneScape (OSRS) crashes or will not load on your PC, first identify where it fails: the Jagex Launcher, the game’s loading screen, graphics startup, in-game play, or the connection. Then work through these eight checks in order. They target different causes, so no single fix is guaranteed.

1. Pinpoint where OSRS stops working

Note the last thing you see and any error message. Jagex treats launcher problems, client startup and loading failures, crashes during play, and connection issues separately; the distinction helps you avoid trying unrelated fixes.

  • Launcher will not open or sign in: start with Jagex Launcher and account-related troubleshooting.
  • Client stalls at “Loading resources” or opens to a black screen: focus on client files, cache, compatibility, and graphics startup.
  • Game crashes after login or during an activity: check system stability and graphics, then use the crash-specific options below.
  • Login or connection fails without the client crashing: troubleshoot the network path separately.

Jagex’s client startup guide, Loading resources guide, and crash guide cover different cases.

2. Restart Windows and close unnecessary programs

Save your work, restart the PC, then launch OSRS before reopening other demanding programs. Jagex recommends restarting and closing unnecessary applications when diagnosing crashes; this can reduce CPU and memory pressure, but it is not a guaranteed fix.

3. Compare your PC with Jagex’s OSRS recommendations

For the official Old School client, Jagex lists Windows 10 or later (64-bit), 8 GB of RAM, OpenGL 4.4, Vulkan 1.1, and at least 200 MB of available storage as current recommendations. These are Jagex’s published recommendations, not a promise that a system meeting them cannot crash. Check the OSRS specifications page for the full requirements and supported-client information.

4. Update Windows and your graphics driver

Install available Windows updates and the latest graphics driver appropriate for your GPU. Jagex notes that outdated graphics drivers can cause performance problems and directs Windows players to their graphics-card manufacturer for driver updates. If your PC has both integrated and dedicated graphics, make sure the game is assigned to the dedicated GPU; the exact setting varies by hardware and Windows version. See Jagex’s performance guidance and client troubleshooting.

5. Clear the cache for the client you actually use

Damaged or incomplete local game files can interfere with startup. Jagex says cache files can become damaged or corrupted and cause in-game problems. Deleting a cache makes the client download game data again, so allow the download to finish before judging performance. The folder depends on the client:

Client Windows cache location Folder Jagex says to delete
Standalone client %USERPROFILE%jagexcache Live
Jagex Launcher %localappdata%JagexOld School RuneScapedata Live
RuneLite %USERPROFILE%.runelitejagexcache Live
Steam %localappdata%JagexOld School RuneScapedata Data

Use Jagex’s cache-clearing instructions for the current steps and confirm the path for your client rather than deleting a similarly named folder elsewhere. If you suspect the cache is still downloading, Jagex says to press Alt + backtick to open the Developer Console and enter displayfps to inspect disk-cache progress; see its cache-usage guide.

6. Test compatibility mode only for a matching startup problem

If the client gets stuck loading or shows error c0000409, Jagex suggests trying Windows compatibility mode for the OSRS executable. Open the executable’s Properties, select the Compatibility tab, and follow Jagex’s compatibility-mode instructions. This is a targeted test, not a default setting: Jagex warns that some players report worse performance in compatibility mode. If performance drops, turn it off.

7. Separate graphics problems from connection problems

If the client opens but graphics are broken or performance is poor

Lower the in-game graphics settings, confirm the dedicated GPU is selected if your PC has one, and check whether the cache has finished loading. These checks address graphics or performance symptoms; they will not necessarily resolve a launcher or network failure. Jagex’s performance guide covers these options.

If login or connection is the problem

Temporarily test without a VPN, check that your firewall allows the game and launcher, and try a wired connection if one is available. These are network troubleshooting steps, not general crash fixes. Follow Jagex’s connection guidance before changing security settings.

8. Escalate with the symptom-specific options

If the targeted checks do not resolve a crash, Jagex’s crash guidance includes reinstalling, testing with a new Windows profile, and scanning for malware. These are later steps because they are more disruptive than restarting, updating, or clearing the correct cache. If a crash occurs during an OSRS activity and is tied to LootTracker save data, Jagex documents the in-game ::repairlt command for that specific scenario; do not use it as a general repair command. If the problem continues, submit a ticket through Jagex’s crash support page with the client you use, when the failure occurs, and any error text.

Other cases to keep in mind

  • Java: Jagex has a Java reinstall guide for Old School RuneScape that addresses incompatible or multiple Java versions preventing the client from loading. Treat this as a later option for a matching loading symptom and follow Jagex’s instructions before uninstalling Java: Java reinstall guide.
  • Steam Deck: Jagex says Steam Deck is not currently supported and may not provide full functionality. If that is your device, consult the specifications page rather than assuming Windows PC troubleshooting will apply.
  • Third-party clients: Jagex’s specifications page lists approved clients, including RuneLite and HDOS. Check that page for the current list before switching clients.
