To save a build as a Litematica schematic, you first create an area selection around the blocks you want to keep, then save that selection from Litematica’s Area Editor. The project’s own FAQ describes the process in exactly that order: select the area, then save it as a schematic. The steps below cover the default controls, how to handle large builds, where the saved file goes, and what to do when a shortcut does not respond.

Before you start

  • Litematica must be installed and running in the Minecraft world that contains the build. Saving works from the world you are standing in; the file is then stored on your computer.
  • You need to be able to reach every block in the area you plan to capture. Distance matters for large selections, covered in the chunk section below.

How to save a selected build as a schematic

  1. Create the area selection. Set the bounds of the selection so they enclose the blocks you want to capture. The Litematica FAQ treats this selection as the first step in creating a schematic.
  2. Confirm the chunks have loaded. For a large area, watch the Missing Chunks notice. It reports how many chunks in the selection still need to load. Move toward the unloaded part of the build until the notice clears.
  3. Open the Area Editor. The default shortcut is Numpad Multiply. If that key does nothing, open the main menu with M and navigate to the area tools instead.
  4. Save the selection as a schematic. Use the save action in the Area Editor to write the selection to a file. The file is a schematic you can load later; saving does not place anything in the world.

Where the saved file goes and how to load it

Litematica schematics use the .litematic extension. To reuse a file, place it in the .minecraft/schematics/ folder inside your Minecraft installation directory. In the game, open the main menu with M and choose Load Schematics. Loading a file and saving a selection are separate actions: a saved file does not appear in the world until you load it and place it.

Shortcut and menu troubleshooting

The Area Editor shortcut does nothing

Litematica uses MaLiLib’s custom keybind system, not the vanilla Controls screen, so a key that works for other mods may not be assigned here. Open M and then C to reach the configuration area, select Hotkeys, and check or change the assignment for the Area Editor. Keyboard layouts other than QWERTY can map the default keys to different characters, so a default that fails on your keyboard is often a layout issue rather than a fault in the mod.

A large build saves incomplete

If the Missing Chunks notice still shows chunks, the selection is not fully loaded and the save will miss those parts. Stay within range of the unloaded chunks until the count reaches zero, then save again.

You edited a schematic that is already loaded

Changes you make to a loaded schematic affect the copy held in memory, not the file on disk. To keep those changes, save from the Loaded Schematics list using Save to file. The Litematica wiki warns that some older versions had a corruption bug when overwriting the original file. If you are on one of those versions, save to a new filename instead of overwriting, and keep the original as a backup. The wiki does not list which releases are affected, so check your version’s release notes before relying on overwrite saves.

The saved file does not show up in the world

This is expected behavior. Saving only writes the file. Use Load Schematics from the M menu, select the file from the .minecraft/schematics/ folder, and place it in the world.
