Yes, with an important qualification. GameSpot’s reviewer Jordan Ramée titled his review “Dragon Age: The Veilguard Review – Return To Form,” arguing that the game feels like BioWare returning to its strengths. He also said it is less complex and nuanced than earlier Dragon Age games, and that problems with the mage class keep it from being superb. Whether it is a return to form for you depends on which part of the older games you valued most.
What “return to form” means in this review
The phrase is one critic’s judgment, not a measured consensus. Read in context, it describes a strong companion-led BioWare adventure with a satisfying action role-playing game built around it. It does not claim the game matches the systems depth of Dragon Age: Origins or Dragon Age: Inquisition. Ramée’s point is that the core pleasures of the series are back, while some of its complexity is not.
EA’s launch release, published October 31, 2024, described the game in similar terms, and EA later reported that reviews were broadly positive. Those are publisher statements, so they should be weighed as such. Reception has not been uniform. A PC Gamer retrospective published in April 2026 noted that Steam user reviews were mixed.
What the game is
Dragon Age: The Veilguard launched on October 31, 2024. Players create Rook and assemble a team of companions to stop ancient elven gods who were unleashed after Solas’s ritual went wrong. The story is the framework for a series of companion arcs, and the game is built around the relationships between Rook and that team.

Character creation offers three classes, Warrior, Mage and Rogue, each with specializations. BioWare’s pre-launch material describes combat as a mix of real-time action, an ability wheel that can pause the action to issue companion commands, and combos that chain abilities together. GameSpot characterized the released combat as real-time and action-oriented.
Where the game returns to form
Companions and relationships
EA’s launch description places companion stories and relationships at the center of the game, and says player choices affect those relationships and how companion stories resolve. This is the strongest argument for the “return” framing. If the emotional pull of Dragon Age has always come from the people traveling with you, The Veilguard puts that front and center rather than treating companions as a support system for the plot.

Combat as a satisfying action system
BioWare’s community team, in a June 11, 2024 introduction, wrote: “Combat is another area that has a lot of depth to it – both in how you choose to defeat your enemies and its progression throughout the game.” Reviewers who prefer fast, fluid fights and visible skill progression will find the most to like here. The ability wheel gives some tactical control without turning the game into a turn-based or fully paused system.
Where longtime fans may object
Less role-playing complexity
The most consistent criticism tied to the “return” framing is that the game is simpler in its role-playing systems than earlier entries. Players who came for dense dialogue trees, branching political consequences or intricate party tactics may feel the game trades depth for momentum. This is GameSpot’s judgment, and it should be read as criticism of the design, not a measurement.
The mage class
GameSpot’s review subheading named issues with the mage class as one of the reasons the game is not superb. Players who favor spellcasting, or who chose the Mage in earlier games, should check reviews and player discussion of that class before committing.
Platforms and PC features

The PC feature list comes from BioWare’s own PC Features journal, published before launch. It is a description of what the developer built, not an independent performance test.
BioWare also reported several pre-launch testing figures in the same journal: 40% of platform testing effort, more than 200,000 hours of performance and compatibility testing, and close to 10,000 hours of user research testing on inputs and interface. These are developer-reported figures, not independent audits.

Sales context
PC Gamer’s April 11, 2026 article reported that the game sold 1.5 million copies in its first three months, against EA expectations of half that figure. This is secondary reporting based on the outlet’s own sourcing, not an official sales filing, so treat it as context rather than a measure of how players feel about the game.
