Mario Kart World’s Free Roam gives the roads between its race courses a purpose of their own: you can explore at your own pace, stumble into short challenges, hunt for collectibles, and take photos. That makes it a distinctive draw for players who like self-directed discovery. It is not a story campaign, though, and its open-ended pace may feel aimless if you want a steady stream of objectives.
Why Free Roam makes the world matter between races
Mario Kart World connects its courses with roads and varied regions that players can drive between. Nintendo describes Free Roam as a way to explore that world alone or with friends, rather than simply queueing up for another race. The game also includes Grand Prix, Knockout Tour, Battle, and other modes, so Free Roam is one part of a broader package—not a replacement for racing.
The distinction is in the pace. Grand Prix and Knockout Tour give you ordered competition and clear race objectives; Free Roam lets you choose where to go and what to try. Nintendo’s announcement also describes changing weather and a day-and-night cycle, while the world’s scale becomes more apparent when you leave the prescribed race routes. Nintendo’s announcement presents the interconnected world as a central feature, but whether that freedom feels engaging depends on how much you enjoy exploring without a fixed route.
What you can do in Free Roam
Trigger P Switch Missions
Drive over a P Switch to start a short challenge. Nintendo’s examples include racing through gates before time runs out and collecting coins. The missions are designed to send players to places or actions they might otherwise miss, and to encourage them to pick up skills and routes along the way. In Nintendo’s developer interview, developer Atsuko Asahi said: “P Switch Missions involve going to places you normally wouldn’t, or repeating actions you wouldn’t often perform.” Nintendo’s interview with the development team explains the intent behind these challenges.

Producer Kosuke Yabuki said the team wanted to make a larger game without making it so complicated that it took ages to start playing. Developer Shintaro Jikumaru described a related goal: “In Mario Kart, we think it’s best for players to discover different ways to play as they drive around, so one of our goals was for players to naturally pick up skills as they play through the missions.” In practice, that makes the missions small prompts for experimenting with routes and driving techniques, rather than a conventional campaign plot.
Find collectibles and routes
Free Roam also has Peach Medallions and ? Panels to discover. Nintendo Life’s guide says these collectibles contribute to unlocks and customization. Searching for them can give a trip across the map a concrete target, while the roads themselves invite detours and route discovery. Nintendo Life’s Free Roam guide covers the entry point and collectible types.

Take in the scenery and use Photo Mode
Not every reason to roam needs to be a checklist. Ars Technica’s hands-on preview found the scale of the world compelling when leaving the race routes, and praised the mix of exploration, challenges, and collectibles. Nintendo Life’s review likewise highlighted scenery and photo opportunities. Producer Yabuki also pointed to driving with friends and taking pictures together in Photo Mode as possibilities in Free Roam.
Is Free Roam a killer app—or too aimless?
“Killer app” is a judgment about who the mode is for, not an official label or a settled consensus. Free Roam has a strong case if you enjoy setting your own goals: find a switch, try a route, chase a collectible, or stop to take a picture. The course-to-course roads become playable space rather than just connective tissue between races.

The counterpoint is that freedom can leave some players unsure what to do next. Nintendo Life’s reviewer found the map aimless at times and considered some rewards underwhelming relative to the effort of finding them. That sits alongside the positive response to its scenery and challenges, rather than disproving it: players seeking atmosphere and discovery may value the journey, while players who want dense objectives and consistently substantial rewards may prefer a more structured mode.
Free Roam is therefore a credible reason Mario Kart World feels different, especially if you want a slower, more exploratory way to spend time in its world. It is not evidence that every player will consider it the game’s best mode.

Where is Free Roam, and how do you start?
From the game’s start screen, press + to enter Free Roam, according to Nintendo Life’s guide dated July 8, 2026. The entry point is easy to overlook if you expect the mode to be prominent in the main menu.
Can you play Free Roam in split screen?
Nintendo Life’s guide describes a limited split-screen option accessed through Online Play and a friends room, which requires an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription. The guide says this version does not support the full set of Free Roam challenges or collectibles, so it should not be treated as equivalent to the complete mode. Online requirements and interface steps can change with software updates; check the current in-game options if the path differs.
Who should try it first?
- Try Free Roam if you like exploration, photo opportunities, hidden finds, and short optional driving challenges.
- Choose a race mode if you want continuous competition, clearly ordered objectives, and progression centered on race results.
- Give it time if the map initially feels open-ended: P Switches and collectibles provide targets, but the mode does not impose a single route through them.
Mario Kart World is a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, announced for the system’s June 5, 2025 launch. Nintendo’s announcement confirms the platform and launch date. Free Roam is best understood as an exploration mode built around that connected world—not as a requirement to enjoy the game’s racing.
