Nintendo Switch 2 handles vibration and button mapping in two separate places under System Settings. You can turn controller vibration on or off from the Controllers & Accessories menu, and you can remap individual buttons from the Change Button Mapping screen in the same menu. Neither change requires buying a new controller. The steps below cover the menu paths, which controllers support remapping, what cannot be changed, and what to do when a mapping does not seem to apply.
How to turn controller vibration on or off
Vibration is a system-wide setting, not a per-controller one. Once it is enabled, it applies to every controller paired with the console.
- From the HOME Menu, select System Settings.
- Select Controllers & Accessories.
- Toggle Controller Vibration.
When you first turn the setting on, the controller you used to make the change briefly vibrates as confirmation. After that, the enabled setting covers all paired controllers. Nintendo’s support material for this feature is titled “How to Activate/Deactivate HD Rumble 2,” so you may see the same behavior described under that name in the same menu area.
How to remap or disable a button
Button mapping is set per controller. Use the following path on the console you want to change.

Which controllers support remapping
Nintendo lists remapping support for the controller families below. The table reflects Nintendo’s published documentation; it does not test how each controller feels in use.
| Controller | Button remapping | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Joy-Con 2 (L/R) | Supported | Presets can be loaded onto another Joy-Con 2 of the same side (left or right). |
| Switch 2 Pro Controller | Supported | Presets can be loaded onto another Switch 2 Pro Controller. |
| Joy-Con (L/R), original Switch | Supported | Listed by Nintendo alongside the Switch 2 controllers. |
| Pro Controller, original Switch | Supported | Listed by Nintendo alongside the Switch 2 controllers. |
| Switch Lite built-in buttons | Supported | Nintendo says the console’s own buttons can also be remapped. |
If you already own one of these controllers, start there. A new Switch 2 Pro Controller is not required for remapping.

Saving, loading, and resetting mappings
Save a custom configuration to a preset
Nintendo’s instructions describe five preset slots for saving a custom configuration. A saved preset can be loaded onto another controller of the same type, such as a second left Joy-Con 2. It cannot be loaded onto a different controller type.
Return a controller to default mapping
Open Change Button Mapping, choose the controller, and select Reset. This restores that controller’s default layout.
Reset after forgetting a change
If you do not remember what you changed, Nintendo says that waking the console from sleep can show an option to reset controller inputs. Check this prompt before you spend time retracing your settings.

What you cannot change
Some inputs are fixed, and a few limits apply to the stick controls:
- POWER, Volume, HOME, and SYNC cannot be remapped.
- No other button can be assigned the functions of POWER, Volume, HOME, or SYNC.
- Stick directions cannot be assigned to buttons.
- The left and right stick inputs can be swapped with each other.
The stick-swap option is the only stick-related remapping available. If you need a different layout for the sticks, that is the boundary of what the menu allows.

A wrench icon indicates that a controller has a custom mapping. If the system has changed a mapping while it was asleep, Nintendo says a message can appear after you wake it.
If a mapping does not seem to work
- Confirm that you changed the mapping for the controller you are actually using. Mappings are set per controller.
- Look for the wrench icon to confirm the controller has a custom mapping.
- Check whether you are in a testing or calibration task, where mappings are turned off.
- Remember that mappings are saved on the console. A mapping configured on one Switch 2 will not follow the controller to another system.
- If a preset will not load, make sure the target controller is the same type as the one the preset was saved from.
What Nintendo says about HD Rumble 2
Nintendo developer Takuhiro Dohta described the vibration hardware in a developer interview: “However, the HD rumble 2 that’s installed this time not only provides stronger vibration, but also feels more realistic and has quicker response times.”
That is Nintendo’s own description of the hardware. No independent comparison of Switch 2 vibration against the original HD Rumble has been published in the sources available for this guide, so treat the claim as the manufacturer’s assessment. If vibration feels too strong for you, turn it off in the menu path described above.
