The best horror game with a pursuer you can’t simply defeat depends on the kind of pressure you want: Resident Evil 2 makes you plan escape routes through familiar rooms, Alien: Isolation puts stealth and hiding at the center, and Amnesia: The Bunker adds scarce resources and only limited ways to resist. In these games, “can’t defeat” is best understood as “can’t remove through ordinary combat for much of the experience”—not necessarily as literal invulnerability.
How to choose a horror game with an unstoppable-feeling pursuer
Think about what you want to do when the hunter appears. Do you want to flee through a map you are learning, hide from a single dominant threat, or juggle supplies while deciding whether a brief attempt to fight back is worth the risk? These three games offer distinct answers.

Resident Evil 2: escape Mr. X through rooms you know
The 2019 remake gives the Tyrant—commonly called Mr. X—a more prolonged stalking role than the original game. In a 2019 interview, director Yasuhiro Anpo said the Tyrant follows the player from room to room. The remake’s version pursues objectives that include destroying evidence and eliminating remaining lifeforms; in the original, the Tyrant appeared only in Scenario B. PlayStation Blog’s interview with Anpo explains the change.
The tension is as much about navigation as confrontation: a familiar room can become dangerous when the pursuer is nearby, so you need to know where you can go next. Anpo’s practical advice captures that loop: “If you hear its footsteps, then I’d say run like hell! I recommend also knowing your surroundings and constantly knowing what your escape routes are.”

Choose Resident Evil 2 if you want pursuit to interrupt and complicate exploration rather than define every moment as a hiding sequence. The cited GamesRadar+ guide lists the remake for PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Switch, but that list does not establish current availability in every region or storefront. GamesRadar+’s horror-game guide was published September 24, 2026.
Alien: Isolation: make stealth and hiding your answer
Alien: Isolation is the clearest pick here if you want one dominant hunter to make you feel outmatched. Creative Lead Alistair Hope said the team wanted “a new underpowered and underprepared character facing overwhelming odds.” In a PlayStation Blog interview, Hope connected that aim to the original Alien film’s “haunted house in space” atmosphere and cited the Clock Tower games as an influence on the idea of a weak protagonist hiding from a stalking horror.

Stealth and hiding are central to how you respond. A motion tracker may help you check for danger, but it can also create risk: PC Gamer notes that the creature can hear it and see its light. That makes the tool a situational choice rather than a guarantee of safety. PC Gamer’s horror-game guide also describes the game as a prolonged evasion of an Alien hunter.
Choose this game if you want the threat of being discovered to shape your movements and decisions. GamesRadar+ lists it for Xbox Series X, Xbox One, PS4, and PC; that guide’s platform listing is not confirmation of current regional storefront availability. Amnesia: The Bunker: run and hide while managing scarce resources
Amnesia: The Bunker suits players who want pursuit to sit alongside survival decisions. PC Gamer describes the game as expanding run-and-hide play while allowing only extremely limited ways to fight back. You are also juggling generator fuel, a limited inventory, and environmental hazards. Those pressures make the pursuer hard to stop or only briefly resist, rather than literally impossible to affect.
Pick The Bunker if you want resource management to complicate your response to danger. It offers a different emphasis from the room-to-room escape planning of Resident Evil 2 and the stealth-first evasion of Alien: Isolation. PC Gamer’s guide to horror games describes its run-and-hide and resource pressures.
