Play the main story in release order, from KINGDOM HEARTS FINAL MIX through KINGDOM HEARTS III and Re Mind. Two entries, 358/2 Days and Re:coded, are included in the official collection only as HD cutscene compilations, so you can watch them rather than play them. Melody of Memory can wait until you have finished the central arc. χ Back Cover is an optional film for backstory. This order is our own practical recommendation, built from Square Enix’s descriptions of what each collection contains.
How the collections are grouped
Square Enix sells the series in three collections, and the all-in-one package combines all of them. The table below shows what each entry is and how it is delivered inside the collection.

The order to play
If you have the time, play the following in this order. Each step keeps the characters and premise changes in sequence.
- KINGDOM HEARTS FINAL MIX
- Re:Chain of Memories
- KINGDOM HEARTS II FINAL MIX
- Birth by Sleep FINAL MIX
- Dream Drop Distance HD
- 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage –
- KINGDOM HEARTS III
- Re Mind
Re:Chain of Memories is part of the connective story rather than a side trip, so skipping it may leave character and premise changes in KINGDOM HEARTS II unexplained.

What you can skip, and what to watch instead
358/2 Days and Re:coded
Both appear in the 1.5+2.5 ReMIX collection as HD cutscene compilations, not playable remasters. A newcomer can watch them inside the collection instead of tracking down their original hardware. Skipping the play is a reasonable time saving; skipping the story is not, because both films belong to the larger continuity.
Melody of Memory
Square Enix lists Melody of Memory as a series title, but it is not part of the three collections that the company describes as the journey culminating in III + Re Mind. If your goal is to catch up on the central arc, defer it until you have finished that arc. This is advice about scope, not a claim that the game has no story relevance.

- To play the physical version of KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I–III], an internet connection and additional data download are required.
χ Back Cover
χ Back Cover is an HD movie about the Foretellers and the series’ origins. It adds distant backstory rather than advancing the main arc, so watch it after the core games if you want the broader mythology.
Re Mind
Re Mind is best treated as a post-game expansion of KINGDOM HEARTS III’s climax, not a replacement for the base game. Play or buy it if you want the additional chapter and revelations Square Enix describes.

Which version to buy
The main choice is between the all-in-one collection and buying individual bundles. Square Enix’s October 8, 2026 launch announcement for KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I~III] lists the following.
| Option | What it includes | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I~III], physical | All three collections: 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and III + Re Mind | Requires an internet connection to download additional data |
| KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I~III], digital | All three collections | Digital edition; no additional download requirement is stated |
| Individual bundles | 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, or III + Re Mind | Availability varies by region and store |
Square Enix’s announcement names Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and the Microsoft Store on Windows for Collection [I~III]. Its current lineup also lists the collections and III + Re Mind on Steam and the Epic Games Store, and says the series launched on Steam on June 13, 2024. Check your local store for regional availability before buying.

Nintendo Switch cloud versions
If you are considering an older Nintendo Switch cloud version, note its deadline. Square Enix states that Nintendo Switch cloud versions stopped being sold on June 9, 2026, and that the cloud titles remain playable only until June 9, 2027 at 14:59 UTC. Check the official support notice for current details before relying on a cloud copy.
What these sources do and do not establish
Square Enix’s pages establish what each collection contains, which entries are films, and how the company positions 2.8 and 0.2 relative to III. They do not publish a must-play ranking, so the order and skip advice above is our judgment rather than an official classification. Square Enix does not state how much story comprehension is lost by skipping any single entry, and no official playtime figures are published for these entries, so this guide does not give hour estimates.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAvoid reading any entry as officially skippable. The company describes the whole package as the full journey, and the choices above are only about time.
