Use the steps that match what you were doing rather than assuming a particular cause.
Check the email address on your Steam account
- Open Account Details in Steam and check the contact email address shown there.
- Look for Steam’s “Verified” status. That is the address Steam associates with the account. Steam says it attempts verification when an account is created or when the user makes a first purchase. Steam’s verification guidance.
If the address is wrong or you no longer control it, use the contact-email change or account-recovery route below. If it is correct, identify whether you are waiting for a verification link or a Steam Guard login code; the troubleshooting differs.

If a Steam Guard email or code is missing
These steps apply to Steam Guard email delivery. A login code is not the same as the link used to verify or change a contact address.
- Check the inbox for the email registered to the Steam account, including its spam or junk folder.
- Add [email protected] and [email protected] to your contacts or trusted senders, as Steam recommends.
- Allow for possible email-provider delays. Steam’s Steam Guard code-help page says to wait up to 30 minutes before requesting a new code.
Steam’s Steam Guard FAQ says to contact support if the verification email has not arrived after three hours. That threshold is separate from the 30-minute wait on the code-help page; they are not interchangeable instructions.

If you are changing your contact email
- In the Steam client, go to Settings → Account → Change contact email.
- Enter your account password and the new email address.
- Keep the Steam dialogue open while you open the email and follow its verification link.
- After the link opens its success page, return to the still-open Steam dialogue and finish the change.
If the email does not arrive, Steam suggests trying an address from a different email provider. If an error appears during the change, Steam’s instructions say: “If you see an error message anytime during this process wait a few minutes and try again.” See Steam’s contact-email instructions.
If you cannot access the old email
Steam describes a browser-based email reset with SMS confirmation if a phone number is already attached to the account. If you cannot use that option, follow Steam’s account recovery flow or contact support. Recovery options depend on what account and phone access you still have.

When to contact Steam Support
If the address is correct, delivery checks and the applicable retry have not helped, or you cannot complete recovery, use Steam Support. For suspected account compromise, follow Steam’s account security recommendations and secure the email account associated with Steam as well.
