In Bedrock, start at 4 chunks—the default documented by Microsoft—and increase it only if you need activity to continue farther away and your device handles the extra load. In Java, choose the lowest setting that keeps the nearby gameplay activity you need running smoothly, then adjust in small steps. Keep render distance separate: it controls what you can see, while simulation distance affects where game activity is processed.
What simulation distance does
Simulation distance sets how far from a player Minecraft processes game activity. Microsoft’s Bedrock guide gives examples including entity behavior, mob spawning, plant growth, and fluid movement. A larger radius can keep activity running farther away, but it requires more performance from the client and server. Microsoft’s Bedrock simulation-distance guide describes the setting and its effects.
For Java, Mojang’s 21w38a snapshot notes said, “Entities will not be updated outside of simulation distance,” and explained that the setting could allow higher render distance with less CPU load. That snapshot is useful for understanding the setting’s purpose, but it is not a complete description of ticking, spawning, or chunk-loading behavior in every current Java version. How to choose a setting
Start with the activity you need
If performance or server responsiveness is your priority, keep simulation distance low. Raise it when you have a specific reason for activity to continue farther from your player—for example, you want nearby crops, mobs, or fluids to keep processing while you move away. Increase the value in small steps and check whether the behavior you care about changes. Those examples are documented for Bedrock; exact mechanics can differ by edition and version.

Use Bedrock’s documented default as a starting point
Microsoft documents 4 chunks as Bedrock’s default simulation distance and says the setting can go as high as 12 chunks depending on the device. The available choices are device-dependent, so 12 is not a universal maximum for every Bedrock player. These are documentation values, not a performance guarantee or a tested recommendation for your hardware. Microsoft Learn
Adjust Java for your version and situation
The cited Java documentation does not establish one best value or a universal range for every Java version, device, and multiplayer server. Start low, raise the setting only when you need more distant activity, and judge the result in your own world or server. Avoid applying Bedrock’s documented range to Java.

Simulation distance and render distance are different
Render distance controls how far away blocks, entities, and other objects are drawn. Simulation distance controls how far away game mechanics are processed. You can therefore see a distant area without all of its activity continuing as though a player were nearby. Raise render distance for a farther visible horizon; raise simulation distance when you need activity to continue farther away. Both settings have performance implications, but simulation distance adds processing work beyond simply drawing more of the world. Server view-distance limits can also cap what a client sees. What to check on a multiplayer server
A server’s configuration can limit the effective distance, so increasing a client setting may not produce the change you expect. If the slider seems to have little effect, ask the server operator what limits are in place. The server’s view-distance limit can constrain what you see; the exact behavior depends on the server and game version. Minecraft Wiki: server.properties

When ticking areas matter in Bedrock
Bedrock ticking areas are a separate, advanced way to keep selected areas active away from a player. Microsoft documents scale limits and additional performance costs, so they are not a general substitute for choosing an appropriate simulation distance. Microsoft’s ticking-area guide

Chunk-loading behavior changes across releases, so do not rely on old spawn-chunk advice without checking your installed version.
