ADS means aiming down sights: your operator raises the weapon and looks through its sights before firing. Hipfire means firing without that step, so the weapon stays at the hip. Hipfire gets shots out sooner, while ADS is the more accurate option, especially at distance. Which one you should use depends on the Call of Duty release, the weapon, the range, and how much time you have.
What ADS means
Pressing the ADS control makes your operator bring the weapon up to eye level and aim through its sights. Activision’s guide to the 2019 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, written by James Mattone and published October 30, 2019, says ADS is more accurate in almost all of the cases it describes and is especially useful when the target is far away.
What hipfire means
Hipfire is shooting without raising the weapon to the sights. Activision’s 2019 guide calls it “the fastest way to fire a weapon but lacks accuracy.” The official Modern Warfare III guide, titled Weapons Training and Tactics and undated in the text available to us, takes the same line in shorter form: its heading for hipfire reads “Hipfire is Speed, Not Accuracy.”
Hipfire, ADS and Tac-Stance compared
Modern Warfare III adds a third option, Tac-Stance, which sits between the other two. The table below uses the qualitative descriptions from the official guides. None of them supplies a measured accuracy figure or time-to-kill comparison.

Choosing between hipfire and ADS
The simplest rule is to match the stance to the distance and the time you have. The Modern Warfare guide frames the decision that way, and the Modern Warfare III guide gives the same basic advice.
Very close targets
When an opponent is almost on top of you, hipfire can land shots before a full sighting animation finishes. Close-range weapons are the best fit for this, according to the MWIII guide.

Longer engagements
When the target is farther away, ADS is usually the better choice for accuracy. Sight alignment matters more at range, and that is where the sights earn their time cost.
Switching mid-fight
A close fight can turn into a longer one. The Modern Warfare guide describes starting with hipfire for a quick first shot and then moving into ADS for more accurate follow-up fire. Players who expect a longer engagement can also pre-aim before entering the area.

What ADS costs you
ADS is not free. The MWIII guide names three drawbacks:
- Raise time. The weapon has to come up to eye level before the sights are usable.
- Reduced peripheral view. The sight blocks part of what you can see around the target.
- Attachment penalties. Some attachment setups slow ADS, which can make sighting impractical in a fast fight.
Tac-Stance in Modern Warfare III
Tac-Stance is an optional intermediate stance in Modern Warfare III. The guide places its accuracy above hipfire and below ADS, and says it keeps a wider view than full sighting. Because it depends on supported Modern Warfare III setups, check whether your weapon and loadout can use it before planning around it. Tac-Stance does not replace hipfire or ADS in the official guidance; it is a third choice for close fights where neither extreme fits.

Recoil and look speed
The Modern Warfare guide says recoil applies in both modes, and its amount varies by weapon. Manually adjusting your aim to counter recoil can tighten your spread during sustained fire.
The same guide notes that hipfire look speed is faster than ADS look speed unless you change that setting. In its own illustrated Modern Warfare comparison, adjusted hipfire could be tighter than ADS without recoil adjustment. That is a demonstration from that one game, not a rule that applies to every weapon or title.

Settings and differences between games
The advice above comes from three different releases, and the details differ between them.
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019): Activision’s guide dated October 30, 2019 covers ADS, hipfire, recoil and look speed.
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III: The official Weapons Training and Tactics guide introduces Tac-Stance and the “Speed, Not Accuracy” framing. The guide text available to us shows no publication date.
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 6: The official controls guide confirms that ADS sensitivity can be adjusted and set separately for each zoom level. This is also undated in the text available to us.
The Modern Warfare III movement guide likewise says ADS sensitivity is adjustable and treats the right value as a personal preference rather than a single correct setting. Check the sensitivity and stance menus in your own copy of the game, because exact labels and handling can change between releases.
