The Cloister collection in The Outer Worlds 2 is four Sojourner’s Logs, one inside each of four Excogitation Chapels. The quest is run by Oracle Laureate Lesley Beckett in Laplace Garden, and the chapels are spread across the eastern side of the map and one hilltop reached late in the story. The walkthroughs below agree on the log count and the overall layout, but they disagree on compass labels and on how to get through two of the doors, so each location is described by its landmark and approach rather than by a single direction.
How the quest starts and ends
Speak with Oracle Laureate Lesley Beckett in Laplace Garden to start the quest, which is titled “Deviations Under Duress.” One reported alternative is to find a chapel and collect its log first. Tracking then begins automatically, so you do not have to talk to Beckett before you go looking. Once all four logs are in your inventory, return to Beckett to finish the quest.
According to the detailed Gaming ProMax walkthrough, the turn-in rewards XP and a High Security Lockbox. That guide says the lockbox needs Advanced Decryption Keys to open. The contents are not consistent across sources, so do not plan around a specific item.
The four chapels in route order
The order below follows the sequence used by the walkthroughs. You can take the first three in any order that suits your exploration. The southwest chapel is the exception, because it is locked behind story progress.

1. East of Winter’s Grasp: the cliff chapel
- Landmark: A chapel built on a cliff east of Winter’s Grasp.
- Approach: Expect Mantisaurs and Zyranium gas on the way up.
- Log position: Upstairs, on the second floor of the chapel.
- Entry check (disputed): One guide lists Brawny or Engineering 4 together with an exterior vent route. Another lists a keycard, Lockpick 17, or Mag-Pick. Read the door prompt when you reach it and use whichever option your character can meet.
2. Far eastern Scrapper camp: Buckshot Bill’s chapel
- Landmark: The Scrapper camp in the far east. Buckshot Bill is the most dependable name to search for.
- Key: Buckshot Bill carries the chapel key. The guides report that you can get it by defeating him, and one source adds pickpocketing him. One guide also lists Lockpick 17 as a way in without the key.
- Compass labels (disputed): Some guides place this camp to the northeast and others to the northwest. Navigate by the camp and by Buckshot Bill, not by the compass label.
- Log position: Inside the chapel.
3. East or southeast of Winter’s Grasp: the cave-access chapel
- Landmark: A cave system close to Winter’s Grasp.
- Approach: Follow the ladders and ledges from the cave up to the cliff-top chapel.
- Log position: On a table inside the chapel.
4. Southwest hill: the story-gated chapel
This chapel cannot be reached by normal surface exploration. You need to progress through The Archive into The Underlands, then use the surface lift that reaches the hilltop.
- Lift activation (one guide only): The detailed Gaming ProMax walkthrough says to reactivate the lifts at a terminal in the southwest Underlands building as part of the “Way of the Light” objective, then use the elevator in a building east of that terminal. The Digital Phablet guide confirms the Underlands and elevator path but does not give those specific steps, so treat the terminal instructions as the walkthrough’s account rather than a confirmed sequence.
- Log position: At the back of the chapel, on a container near a body.
Comparing the four routes
| Chapel | Reliable landmark | Main access obstacle | Log position | How certain the route is |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. East of Winter’s Grasp (cliff) | Cliff-top chapel east of Winter’s Grasp | Door check: Brawny or Engineering 4 with an exterior vent route, or a keycard, Lockpick 17, or Mag-Pick (guides disagree) | Upstairs, second floor | Location agreed across sources; entry check disputed |
| 2. Far eastern Scrapper camp | Buckshot Bill | Chapel key held by Buckshot Bill: defeat him, pickpocket him (one source), or Lockpick 17 (one guide) | Inside the chapel | Landmark reliable; compass direction disputed |
| 3. East or southeast of Winter’s Grasp (cave) | Nearby cave system | Ladders and ledges from the cave up to the cliff | Table inside the chapel | Route described by two guides |
| 4. Southwest hill | Surface lift on the hilltop | Story-gated: The Archive, then The Underlands, then the lift | Back of the chapel, on a container near a body | Lift path confirmed by two guides; terminal steps from one guide only |

Platforms and how current these routes are
The official Xbox page for The Outer Worlds 2 lists the game for Xbox Series X|S and Windows 10/11, and describes it as an Obsidian Entertainment first-person RPG. The route details in this article come from walkthroughs, not from that page, and the sources here do not cover other platforms, so check your version before following the steps.
The Gaming ProMax guide was first published on 2025-10-31 and last updated on 2026-02-24. Selphie1999Gaming’s trophy guide is dated 2025-11-04. A later game patch could change a door check, a key holder, or the lift sequence, so if a step no longer matches what you see, check the current wording of the in-game objective first. The Digital Phablet guide is a second route reference for cross-checking.
