VRS means Valve Regional Standings: Valve’s official monthly system for ranking Counter-Strike rosters. For ranked tournaments, organizers use the relevant VRS list to issue direct invitations. The standings rank a specific five-player roster—not an organization—and Major rules also use regional standings to allocate invitations and the global standings to seed teams after they accept.

What does VRS rank?

Valve defines a roster as five specific athletes, regardless of which organization they represent. A ranking therefore belongs to the lineup, not simply to a team brand: when discussing a position or invitation, the relevant details are the five players and the date of the standings.

Valve’s Counter-Strike 2 Tournament Operation Requirements define “Valve Regional Standings” or “VRS” as Valve’s official system for ranking roster performance. Valve publishes it monthly, and it is the basis for direct VRS invitations.

How does VRS work in CS2?

Ranked-event results contribute to the standings

Valve distinguishes ranked tournaments from unranked tournaments by whether their outcomes generate data used by VRS to determine relative roster performance. Results at an unranked tournament do not generate that data. The tournament requirements define that distinction, but do not provide the detailed calculation formula; point weights or match-value calculations should not be inferred from the rules.

Organizers use a dated standings list to invite rosters

For a ranked event, the organizer specifies which VRS list or lists apply, how many rosters to invite, and the rank at which invitations begin. Invitations must use the latest standings available on the invitation date and proceed sequentially down the list. If a roster declines or cannot accept, the organizer moves to the next eligible roster until the announced direct-invite places are filled.

The applicable VRS rules are tied to the event’s Additional Information deadline. Since organizers select the list and invitation date for their event, there is no single cutoff or list that applies to every CS2 tournament. ESL’s 2025 Pro Tour rule update likewise describes direct VRS invitations based on Valve’s monthly publication, with the invitation date announced before the event.

A direct invite comes with roster conditions

A directly invited roster generally needs at least three athletes from the invited roster to play in each match to be eligible to accept the invitation. The roster must also satisfy the event’s other criteria. This makes lineup continuity relevant: an organization name alone does not establish that a changed lineup remains eligible as the invited roster.

Regional VRS vs. global VRS at a Major

Major rules assign different jobs to regional and global standings. Regional lists are used for invitations; once invitations have been accepted, the global list is used for pre-event seeding. A roster’s region is determined by the majority of its players, with a tie rule in the supplemental rulebook.

In the Major format described by Valve’s Major Supplemental Rulebook, 32 teams receive VRS invitations: 16 to Stage 1, eight to Stage 2, and eight to Stage 3. The allocations for Stage 2 and Stage 3 by region reflect how many teams from that region reached Stage 3 and the playoffs, respectively, at the preceding Major. These figures describe the format in that rulebook; event-specific rules determine the applicable details.

VRS use Which list? Purpose When?
Major invitations Regional Selects rosters for invitations and stage allocations under the Major rules. Invitation process.
Major pre-event seeding Global Seeds teams after invitations have been accepted. After acceptance.
Other ranked tournaments List or lists chosen by the organizer Determines direct-invite order for the announced slots. Using the latest available standings on the invitation date.

What VRS does—and does not—tell you

  • It is not necessarily a live ranking. Valve publishes VRS monthly; a third-party live ranking is not automatically the list used for an event.
  • It does not mean every event invites teams the same way. Organizers choose the applicable list or lists and invitation details within Valve’s requirements. Events may also have open qualifiers or other routes, as specified in their rules.
  • It ranks rosters, not permanent club slots. The five-player lineup and relevant ranking date matter, especially when players change teams.
  • It does not reveal a formula in the cited requirements. The reviewed rules establish the system’s role and invitation procedure, not the exact calculation method or a current ranking snapshot.
