Go to Xûr in the Tower Courtyard when he is visiting: Bungie says he appears to the right as you enter the Courtyard, from Friday until Tuesday’s reset. Whether Xenology is currently available—and its exact requirements—needs to be checked in the live game; current official Bungie guidance located for this article does not confirm those quest details.
Where to look for Xenology
- Open the Director and travel to the Tower.
- Enter the Courtyard and look to the right for Xûr. Bungie’s Tower guide places him there during his Friday-to-Tuesday visit, ending at reset: Bungie’s Tower guide.
- Speak with Xûr and inspect his vendor inventory for Xenology. The available official guidance confirms his location and visit window, but not whether the quest is offered in the current game version.
If Xenology is not visible
First check whether Xûr is currently visiting, then inspect his inventory in person. If he is there and Xenology still does not appear, the available official sources do not establish a definitive explanation or troubleshooting checklist. Avoid relying on older guides for prerequisites or progress rules unless you can confirm them in-game.

What an Exotic Cipher is used for
An Exotic Cipher has uses beyond Xenology: Bungie lists focusing Exotics at the Cryptarch among its uses, and its Tower guide describes exchanges at the Monument to Lost Lights. See Bungie’s inventory and currencies overview for the current official summary.
Why older Xenology instructions may differ
A third-party guide published July 24, 2025 describes Xenology as a quest from Xûr, but its detailed mechanics are not confirmed by the official Bungie pages cited here. Treat claims about availability, prerequisites, completion counts, or restrictions as unverified until the live game or a current authoritative source confirms them.
