Pick Brujah for close-range brawling, Tremere for blood sorcery, Banu Haqim for stealth, Ventrue for durability and control, Lasombra for shadow-based control, or Toreador for charm and mobility. The game calls these choices clans, rather than classes, and each offers a different playstyle.
Which clan should you choose?
Paradox Interactive describes six playable clans with distinct abilities and characteristics, but its official materials do not rank them by strength or identify one as best for beginners. The recommendations below are a playstyle guide based on the publisher’s descriptions, not a balance ranking.
| Clan | Best fit | Described strengths |
|---|---|---|
| Brujah | Direct, close-range combat | Brawling, knocking enemies around, melee boosts after feeding, and heavy attacks such as Earthshock. Paradox’s Brujah page |
| Tremere | Ranged supernatural attacks | Blood sorcery controls the player’s and enemies’ blood, with abilities such as blood projectiles and attacks that make enemies scream. Paradox’s Tremere page |
| Banu Haqim | Stealth and stalking | Strategic stalking, silent actions after feeding, temporary invisibility, silence, and speed. Paradox’s Banu Haqim page |
| Ventrue | Survivability and control | Feeding hardens Phyre against damage; Dominate can make opponents forget, turn on allies, or be subdued. Paradox’s Ventrue page |
| Lasombra | Shadow-based control and fear | Shadow powers can trap or frighten targets and reposition around them; a perk prevents mortals from attacking during feeding. This clan is associated with the Shadows & Silk add-on. Paradox’s Lasombra page |
| Toreador | Charm and quick repositioning | Entrancement can turn a target into an ally, Blink moves instantly to a target location, and feeding increases movement speed. This clan is associated with the Shadows & Silk add-on. Paradox’s Toreador page |
What does clan choice change?
Your clan shapes abilities and dialogue options. Paradox says each clan starts with a unique passive and has its own ability tree. Ability points come from missions, combat, and exploration; completing a clan tree unlocks a permanent clan perk. The publisher also says relationships and choices affect gameplay, with a dozen endings shaped by player choices. See the official FAQ.
Choosing a clan does not mean every other clan’s abilities are permanently out of reach. Paradox says Phyre can learn abilities from other clans through important vampires in Seattle. Ability Point costs can be higher depending on Discipline alignment, so acquiring those abilities may require additional investment. Paradox’s FAQ explains cross-clan abilities.

Do Lasombra and Toreador require an add-on?
Paradox’s August 19, 2025 announcement says the Shadows & Silk add-on enables Phyre to choose Lasombra or Toreador. The publisher also describes a limited physical Premium Edition with the base game, Expansion Pass, five character cards, a journal, and a SteelBook case; physical editions are sold at select retailers. Check the current platform and edition contents before buying, since availability and packaging can vary. The publisher’s announcement does not establish that Premium is necessary to enjoy the base game. Read Paradox’s Shadows & Silk announcement.

No. Paradox lists six clan choices for Phyre. The story also alternates between Phyre and Fabien, a Malkavian detective, but that narrative role is separate from Phyre’s clan selection. The official FAQ distinguishes the playable clans.
