Legendary Shards are no longer in Destiny 2. Bungie removed them with The Final Shape launch on June 4, 2024, so there is nothing left to spend them on today. What remains useful is what Bungie told players to do before that deadline, which options it offered, and what it said about leftover shards.
Where Legendary Shards stand today
Bungie treats Legendary Shards as a deprecated currency. Its current Monument of Triumph FAQ, in the version dated June 9, 2026, says both Legendary Shards and Planetary Materials were deprecated and are no longer required for gear infusion. The answer covers the two currencies together, so it does not separately describe what each one did.

Bungie’s final recommendations before the deadline
On May 23, 2024, Bungie’s Community Team published a final reminder that players would not be able to use Legendary Shards after The Final Shape launched. Its suggestion was direct: “Buy raid banners for a lifetime or exchange them for some resources at Rahool’s—but please use them before it’s too late.” The two options were in-game only. The announcement named no other uses.

Raid banners were a direct in-game purchase. Players spent shards on them as a consumable, and Bungie’s wording suggests the purchase was meant to cover the rest of a player’s play time, or “for a lifetime.” Bungie did not publish a separate note on how many banners a stockpile would buy.
Resource exchange at Rahool
The alternative was to exchange shards with Rahool for resources. Bungie’s reminder did not give exchange rates or rank the two options against each other, so there is no official basis for choosing one over the other by value. Players had to decide based on what they needed, not on a published return.

No exchange for leftover shards
Bungie’s September 14, 2023 economy announcement drew a firm line on stockpiles. It said: “And to be totally clear, we will not be offering a currency exchange for stockpiled Legendary Shards.” Shards that a player still held after the deadline could not be converted.
The FAQ’s deprecated-currency language does not change that. It describes what happens to the currency, not a route for converting it. Do not read it as a promise that leftover shards can be traded in later.

Why Bungie removed them
Bungie’s stated reasons were about balance and simplicity, not a measured survey of player wealth. It gave three:
- Uneven wealth: Bungie said some players had more shards than they could ever spend, while others struggled to earn enough to use the systems that required shards as a cost.
- Farming loopholes: Bungie cited ways of generating shards that it considered exploitable.
- Economy bloat: Bungie said it wanted to simplify the economy and reduce the number of currencies and items competing for space.
These are Bungie’s own descriptions. The announcement did not include figures, so no numbers can be attached to the wealth gap. For the wider context of Bungie’s economy changes, see its Developer Insights: Economy and Rewards Update.

What the removal means if you still hold shards
Legendary Shards no longer have a use or a conversion path. If you have a record of how much you spent on raid banners or on Rahool exchanges, that history is the only part of the currency that still matters. Any remaining balance cannot be turned into gear or resources.
The two recommendations give a useful lesson for other limited-time currencies: a removal announcement usually names a deadline and the options that remain, but it may not offer a way to recover unspent balance. Check whether a removal gives a conversion path before you rely on a currency you do not need.
