It follows Sora, a Keyblade wielder who travels through Disney worlds with Donald Duck and Goofy. For newcomers who want the broadest current starting package, Square Enix’s KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I~III] bundles the saga’s earlier collections through KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind. Its physical edition requires an internet download, so it is not a complete offline collection.

The first game arrived in March 2002. By the end of June 2025, Square Enix Holdings reported more than 38 million global package shipments and digital sales across the franchise; that publisher figure is not a count of units sold directly to players. (Square Enix Holdings 2025 annual report)
Where should a newcomer start?
The most straightforward publisher-supported package for beginning the main saga is KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I~III]. Square Enix presents it as three grouped collections, spanning the earlier stories through KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind. It is a convenient way to get a broad run of the series, but the groupings are not a simple chronological sequence.

There is no mandatory play order established by the publisher materials cited here. As an editorial recommendation, follow release order for the included playable entries: it lets you encounter the series as its releases unfolded. Pay attention to the collection’s presentation, though: some included entries are HD cutscene compilations rather than games you play.
