Sony’s AI Patent Could Make PlayStation Bosses Learn How You Play

A Sony patent application describes machine learning that uses player-NPC encounter data to generate NPC content, with boss adaptation as one example. Here is what the filing says and what remains unconfirmed.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has a published US patent application describing a machine-learning system that takes data from encounters between players and non-player characters (NPCs) and uses it to generate NPC content. Bosses that adjust to how a player fights are one example that reporting on the filing gives. The filing is a patent application, not an announced PlayStation feature, and Sony has not said it will ship the idea.

What the filing is

The application is US 2026/0295429 A1, titled “AI-adapted non-player character for video game system.” It names Sony Interactive Entertainment Inc. as applicant, gives a filing date of March 31, 2025, and a publication date of October 1, 2026. Patentlyze, the patent-focused report on the filing (published October 2, 2026), lists the application status as “Waiting for an examiner (Apr 9, 2025).” That is a status entry as Patentlyze reported it, not a live check. Anyone following the filing should confirm its current prosecution status in the USPTO’s public records, since patent status changes as examiners act on applications.

How the proposed system works

Patentlyze summarizes the abstract as a three-stage pipeline. Its quoted abstract sentence reads: “Input data for a machine learning model is generated from the player data and the video game data, and the input data is used to obtain non-player character content from the machine learning model.”

  1. Collect data. Player data and video game data are gathered from a video game console or video game device. The reported claim language says these data represent at least one encounter between an NPC and a player while a game is running.
  2. Build model input. The two data sets are combined into input data for a machine-learning model.
  3. Obtain NPC content. The model returns NPC content, which the game can use to change how a character behaves.

The claim text was only available to us in excerpt form. Patentlyze’s reproduction of claim 1 is cut off mid-sentence, and the full USPTO publication could not be retrieved for this article. The three stages above describe the reported structure, not the complete legal wording of the claims.

Boss fights as the example

GamesRadar+ (published October 7, 2026) uses boss fights as the main illustration. Its account of the patent lists the kinds of encounter data the system could draw on:

  • The player’s reaction time to boss attacks or hazards.
  • The timing of boss attacks and of the player’s defensive maneuvers.
  • How often dodges, blocks, or parries are attempted, and how often they succeed.
  • Boss attack patterns, and whether each attack was avoided or countered.
  • Changes to health for either side.
  • Use of the environment during the fight.

These are data examples drawn from the patent as GamesRadar describes it. They show what the filing could observe. They do not show how a boss would behave in a released game.

When the generated content would be produced

Reporting on the patent says the NPC content could be generated before gameplay, during execution, or after gameplay. “In real time” is therefore one contemplated timing, not the only one. The table below separates the three timings and what each would mean for a player.

Timing in the filing What it would mean for a player Status
Before gameplay Content is prepared ahead of a session, so it cannot respond to moves made in that session. Contemplated in the filing, as reported by GamesRadar+. No implementation stated.
During execution (real time) A boss could change its behavior while the fight is running, which is the scenario in GamesRadar+’s headline. Contemplated in the filing, as reported by GamesRadar+. No implementation stated.
After gameplay Content is generated from a finished session and applied to later play. Contemplated in the filing, as reported by GamesRadar+. No implementation stated.

Beyond bosses

Boss adaptation is the most vivid example, but the reporting describes a wider target. Patentlyze says the generated content could cover NPC behavior and character attributes, and it also discusses dialogue and appearance. Those are described possibilities in the filing and carry the same caveat as the boss examples: none is shown working in a game.

What is not established

  • No PlayStation feature has been confirmed. The coverage describes a patent application, and a filing does not show that a product exists.
  • No PS5 or future-console implementation is confirmed.
  • No implementation schedule has been announced by Sony.
  • GamesRadar+ reports no indication of whether Sony will incorporate the technology at all.
  • No released game is shown operating on this system.

The design trade-off behind adaptive bosses

GamesRadar+ raises the central design question. A boss that changes its pattern in response to the player may stay engaging, but it may also become harder to learn, because the player cannot rely on a fixed set of attacks to practice against. The table compares the two approaches. These are editorial implications of the design, not measured outcomes.

Design question Adaptive boss (as the filing describes) Fixed-pattern boss (current norm in many action games)
Difficulty Could respond to a player’s habits and skill level. Difficulty is set by the designer and tested in advance.
Learning A changing pattern may make the fight harder to memorize. Repeated attempts build a reliable pattern to learn.
Variety Encounters could feel different from one attempt to the next. Encounters repeat, which supports precise practice.
Fairness Depends on how the system responds and whether players can read the change. Predictable, so failures are easy to attribute to the player.

How to read the coverage

Patentlyze’s piece focuses on the application itself: its number, dates, claimed data pipeline, and status entry. GamesRadar+ focuses on the player-facing question, using boss fights to show what the filing could mean at the controller. Read the two together. Patentlyze is the closer reading of the filing’s structure, and GamesRadar+ is the clearer account of the gameplay implications.

  • 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
  • Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.

The practical verdict is narrow. Sony has described a way to turn encounter data into NPC content, and bosses that learn from a player are a plausible application the filing names. Whether any of that reaches a PlayStation game is a question the patent cannot answer.
